We correctly romanticize places like Italy and Paris as centers of history, culture and beauty. But it seems that rarely do we consider the design features that make those places so beautiful and appealing to visit and apply those principles to our built environment.
Obviously we can’t retroactively construct centuries old buildings to replicate the history of Italy and France but there are lessons we can take from these places and apply to our own communities and homes. One such lesson that we too often miss is that design built specifically around ease and convenience does not necessarily make our lives better, it just makes them easier and more convenient. The narrow streets of Florence aren’t conducive to smooth flowing traffic and easy surface parking but their walkability and charm offer something much greater.
This morning I stepped inside of a coffee shop that had a long line of cars wrapped around the building waiting in line at the shop’s drive thru window. The staff was in headsets and their primary attention was understandably directed towards the drive thru window and trying to crank out drinks for the expanding line of cars as quickly as possible. Drive thrus are convenient. But I would argue that as a design feature they have not made our lives inherently better. The coffee shop itself felt impersonal. First off, why place much emphasis on interior design when I’m assuming well over half of gross sales come from orders placed through the drive thru? Secondly, when the concern of the customer base is getting a decent coffee drink quickly and without getting out of their vehicle, and the primary role of the staff is to provide that service rapidly, the interaction is purely transactional. There’s no bond between customers and their environment. If the shop closed they’d simply go to another one with a drive thru.
How does this relate to furniture and what we do at Ohio Hardwood Furniture and OHF Interiors? We make loads of design choices when we put together the interior of our home. From big decisions like whether to knock down a wall to open up a space to small ones like where to place a candle on our mantle, all of these choices impact how we interact with our most intimate environment- our home.
At OHF, when we work with clients we always ask how they would like to use the space in which a piece of our furniture is being placed. That seemingly small piece of info allows us to consider design choices that will allow you to use your space in a way that brings you more happiness. If a client suggests they’d like to use their living room to host social gatherings and yet their current space has a large sectional and recliner angled towards a TV, we recognize that their current set up is incongruous with the desire for more social interaction. A better fit for this space will be a seating arrangement with a sofa and chairs positioned to face one another and encourage eye contact and conversation.
In my own home, my wife and I felt we too often ate our dinner on the sofa in front of our TV. This habit also led to us frequently ordering takeout food. Ordering in and sitting in front of the TV was easy and convenient. But rather than bringing us joy it made us feel lazy, less connected to one another and less healthy. We used design to encourage us to eat more often at our beautiful dining table. We replaced the coffee table in front of our sofa with a soft ottoman, eliminating the surface where we’d eat our TV dinners. We also added a number of house plants to our dining area, giving the area added color and charm. Now we communicate with one another more during sit down dinners, eat healthier and have rediscovered the simple pleasure of working together to make a meal and enjoying it with one another.
At OHF we do our very best to be thoughtful about design’s role in creating home environments for our customers that allow them to enjoy a lifestyle that brings them joy. For us, that means more than helping pick the prettiest fabric for a sofa. It means getting to know your values and working with you to create a built environment that cultivates real happiness.

]]>For many of us, the unsettling events of recent years have caused us to reassess how we assign value to the material objects around us. The invasion of Ukraine has forced me to ponder what it would be like to have to make the decision to flee my home at a moment's notice, not being certain what would be left of it when I returned. What are the objects we own it would hurt most to leave behind?
For me, it would be my parent’s round white oak kitchen table I grew up eating family meals at that was passed down to me when I purchased my first home and where my own daughter’s high chair is now sat next to, the third generation of my family to enjoy it's well lived-in charm. It would be books gifted to me with handwritten notes from family and friends on the inside covers, art projects my nieces have made for me, my great grandfather’s framed drafting drawings, family photos, and sports memorabilia from teams that hold a special place in my heart. In other words, the objects I’d miss the most are ones that conger memories of times spent with family and friends, objects that's inherent value lies not necessarily in dollars but rather in their special place in my own history, my own story.
At OHF we’ve tried to use those lessons of what objects we truly find value in to guide how we approach our business. It’s crucial to us that our furniture is of a standard of quality that the piece can live with you and become a part of your family’s story. We take pride in creating heirloom pieces that can be passed down and become family artifacts. We create our furniture to be lived in and used, be that a kitchen island where the family gathers every year to cook holiday meals or a leather library chair to unwind in at the end of a busy week.
All our furniture is manufactured by skilled craftsmen in the USA using building techniques and materials that emphasize our uncompromising commitment to quality. Whether it's mortise and tenon joinery on a quartersawn white oak craftsman bedroom set or an eight-way-hand-tie sofa in full-grain aniline-dyed leather, we build products with the long term in mind.
Below is a list of ways we are committed to building furniture made to become a small part of your family’s story:
-solid hardwood furniture built from sustainably harvested domestic hardwood species (cherry, walnut, quartersawn white oak, maple, elm, ash).
-dovetail drawer boxes
-full extension drawer slides
-immaculate catalyzed conversion varnish wood finishes in a range of color options
-solid, hardwood frames on upholstered furniture pieces
-eight-way-hand-tie spring system on upholstered pieces for unmatched quality, durability, longevity, and comfort.
-aniline-dyed premium leathers with buttery soft textures
-a wide range of top-quality performance fabrics made to withstand the abuse of everyday use.
The objects we surround ourselves with that we hold most dear are the ones we can attach meaning and memories to. In turbulent times, we at OHF take pride in doing our small part in providing meaning and joy to the furniture pieces our customers trust us with to place in their homes.
]]>Whether you’re looking for an Ohio furniture store to visit for an assist with your upcoming renovation and some new designs in furniture, or you’re just gathering ideas for inspiration, you should think of a furniture vendor as a partner in the project. A furniture store is not just a place where you buy furniture. You will buy furniture there, but they can help you create not only the design but the spirit of the interior that you wish to accomplish with a redesign project.
When it comes to customer service, quality, customizability, and downright better processes, we set the bar for Ohio furniture stores if not for furniture stores across the country. Before you get serious about redoing a room in your home or your whole house with new furniture, consider some of these arguments and thinking points.
An Emphasis on Quality and Sustainability
In the modern era, mechanized processes create as much fallout for the environment and for the economy as they reap in return for efficiency. Modern furniture, which is made with synthetic materials and particleboard, using glue and butt joints, might be cheap and easy to produce, but it lacks the staying power of traditional hardwood furniture benchmade using proven techniques. Each piece of furniture that we produce ourselves is created with wood that we mill ourselves; they are produced entirely by hand by skilled craftsmen, from start to finish.
Even modern producers that use native hardwoods are suspect to overharvesting or following unsustainable practices in order to meet demand. While some loggers harvest stands of timber every 7 to 10 years, our logger suppliers are accustomed to waiting up to 10 years - enough time for many trees to mature, improving the quality of the wood and helping to propagate the species.
In keeping with sustainability, we use every piece of wood that comes to us. Odds and ends that are created as scrap during milling are repurposed as firewood to heat our shops and homes. We even repurpose swarf and wood chips as mulch and bedding for livestock, ensuring as little as possible goes to waste.
Assisting with Visualization
We also pride ourselves on customer service and not just on our processes. We understand that furniture has as much of an impact on a setting as does the color scheme or the choice of decor, if not more. As actual, physical entities within a space, furniture can make a pronounced mark on the spirit of an interior.
The thing is, furniture is large, heavy, expensive, and not easily rearranged. That makes planning critical to success, and sometimes you need to be able to visualize the arrangement before you commit to anything.
You can easily use our Room Planner to help you lay out your room and the furniture you envision within it. It’s easy to use and you can create a room layout from the comfort of your own home - then, once you’re done, you can show it to us and we’ll help you turn that vision into reality.
Endless Opportunities for Customization
Here at Ohio Hardwood Furniture, we produce a number of distinct, unique designs for your home, from your bedroom to your office to your kitchen and your living spaces. Many of these are available in native hardwood designs such as cherry, maple, or quartersawn white oak, and in your choice of stain.
We also offer furniture from some of the industry’s most highly respected manufacturers, such as Leathercraft, Thayer Coggin, Copeland, McKinley Leather, Wesley Hall, Charleston Forge, and others. Many of these are highly renowned for their commitment to sustainability as they are for their ability to provide customizations. From your choice of hardwood, stain, or hardware to a wide range of upholstery fabrics and leather, our specialists at Ohio Hardwood Furniture can help you create your furniture your way.
Customer Service You Can Count on
Customer service is every ounce as central to the customer experience as is the ability to customize a purchase, and we pride ourselves on the delivery of exceptionally dedicated customer service.
You can schedule an appointment online or give us a call at 330-657-2095 to schedule a time to come in and visit one of our personal design specialists. ]]>We’ve always given a lot of thought to the suggestions we provide to our customers, and the furniture with which you choose to decorate a setting can make a big impact on the overall feel, and spirit, of the location. It can make or break an interior design, as it were.
But with seating, the effect is even more pronounced, because seating is an interesting class of furniture with which the inhabitants of a home or room interact very intimately. While many other pieces of furniture are simply used for storage or visual appeal, seating arrangements are about the experience, the gathering, and the comfort.
That’s one of the reasons that some of the most popular items in our catalog are from Wesley Hall furniture. You can’t go wrong adding furniture from their collection to your home, and here are our top five reasons that’s the case.
In the age of mechanical processes and high-efficiency machinery that produces as much product as possible in as little time as possible, the folks at Wesley Hall still do things the old-fashioned way.
Every piece of furniture made at Wesley Hall is 100% bench-made in the hills of Western North Carolina, which has been considered a mecca for furniture producers ever since the late 1800s. To this day, many of the country’s elite furniture manufacturers, including Thayer Coggin, Leathercraft, McKinley Leather, and others, are also nestled in the hills of Appalachian North Carolina, producing furniture by hand as they always have. Wesley Hall, like the rest of them, is no exception, headquartered in Hickory, North Carolina.
Not only is each and every piece of furniture produced by their organization entirely handmade by skilled artisans, but they also place a great deal of value on their employees. They invest heavily in their suppliers, craftsmen, and other partners, to ensure that quality and human capital drive the success of the organization.
Being handmade here in the United States, it should come as little surprise that quality is so important to the skilled craftsmen employed by Wesley Hall. to this day, they construct all of their furniture using proven, time-tested techniques.
Each piece of furniture is based around a hand-made, hardwood frame. They use traditional, 8-way hand-tied spring systems that are superior for comfort and durability, before adding premium cushioning components. Each piece of furniture is then finished and upholstered by hand.
Wesley Hall also places a great deal of emphasis on corporate responsibility. Not only do they place quality at the forefront of their operations, but they also take their impact on consumers, the supply chain, and the environment into account.
For example, the wood they use in constructing the frames of their furniture is toxin-free and made of USA-grown, kiln-dried maple, harvested from AHMI-certified sustainable forests. Their wood finishes are free of known carcinogenic materials. They also use toxin-free glues and recycled springs made with lead-free coatings.
The foams they use for cushioning are produced by a select group of American producers that exceed requirements for safety. Their foams are free of carcinogenic fire-retardants and other known harmful materials. Furthermore, their packaging materials are all recyclable.
Environmental consciousness is not the only facet of their corporate responsibility. The company is also dedicated to customer satisfaction and providing an unparalleled level of customer service.
Another great reason to invest in Wesley Hall furniture is that it is easy to customize to the setting of your home’s interior. Oftentimes, an otherwise suitable piece of furniture that doesn’t fit the setting simply can’t be worked into it. Wesley Hall offers countless options for wood finishing and upholstery, making it possible to match the setting with a fine degree of aesthetic harmony.
Whether you need to more closely align the aesthetic of your furniture in terms of color or finish, or you need to choose an upholstery option that is more suitable for the movement and tenor of your interior, Wesley Hall makes it possible. It’s just one of the ways in which they’ve elevated the customer experience and improved their service.
Finally, with seating, it’s all about comfort, which, in many ways, makes a piece of furniture like a Wesley Hall sofa much more functional than other items in your home. For example, the primary function of a desk or a bookshelf is storage; a sofa is about the experience.
They call it the “Wesley Hall sit” for a reason. The comfort of the experience is so distinctive that there are no parallels. In more than one way, the experience associated with Wesley Hall seating is interactive and intimate on a very personal level. It is unique among furniture, and there is a great emphasis on choosing comfortable seating arrangements for the home for this very reason.
Visitors may come into your home and notice your dining room table or your desk or end tables, but they will remember the experience of sitting in a Wesley Hall sofa.
You may have reasons of your own to add a highlight from the Wesley Hall furniture collection to your home, and you can spruce up your living room or dining room with items from our online catalog. Just check out our collection via the link above and get in touch with us at 330-657-2095 if you have any questions.
Otherwise, we’d love to see you in our store, where you can get a better, more personal feel for the seating and other furniture we sell. Furniture, like clothing, sometimes must be “tried on” before a decision can be made. Take some time to come see us in our showroom in Peninsula, Ohio. We’ll be waiting for you!
]]>When you are looking for furniture to complete your home, you want and deserve the best of the best. Researching the most popular and reputable brands is a great place to start. Copeland is one of these brands.
At Ohio Hardwood Furniture, we are proud to provide all of our customers with the best furniture pieces for their homes. We personally supply our customers with handcrafted and personalized furniture but are always looking to improve via innovation. We are constantly working diligently to provide our customers with unforgettable furniture pieces, no matter their style and preferences.
For those looking for stunning and expertly crafted hardwood pieces to add to their home, then you should certainly consider Copeland furniture. All of their finely crafted furniture is inspired by Vermont and its unique yet pristine nature. But which pieces would be best for you and your home? Let’s look at our five best-stelling Copeland furniture pieces to get you one step closer to getting the best furniture for your home.
When you are looking for the perfect piece to complete the look and feel of your bedroom, you should seriously consider a nightstand. The addition of two nightstands would be the most ideal situation, but just one is perfectly fine as well. Having one or two nightstands can pull your entire bedroom together, making your bed less of a focal point and, instead, providing it with a softer look.
Adding Modulux 1-drawer nightstands can not only add an element of style, but these pieces can also provide you with a practical element. For placing a bedside lamp, a book, cup of coffee, a glass of water, charging your phone next to you while you sleep or rest-- the possibilities are endless! The one drawer supplies you with convenient well-hidden storage. Plus, it’s available in cherry, maple, and walnut to best fit your needs.
Another piece of necessary bedroom furniture is the dresser. If you want to properly and conveniently store your clothes and other necessary items, then you will certainly require a dresser. The Moduluxe 2-door, 3-drawer dresser takes your storage and style seriously. The three drawers on this piece provide ample storage space for you and your belongings. On either side of them is a dresser cabinet, furthering your storage but also the piece’s look.
Much like the nightstand, this dresser comes in three options of tree species: maple, cherry, and walnut. There is also a large variety of sizes and functions available for your convenience.
Now let’s look at a piece that’s ideal for a different room in the house: the dining room. When you are decorating your dining room, it’s important that you have the perfect dining room table to fit the appropriate amount of people but can also fit in your available space. The Audrey Fixed Top dining table made of walnut could be that dining room table for you.
This table is especially ideal because it really takes two important factors into consideration: style and comfortability. It affords you and your dining room an irrefutable and unique style that can be loved by all. In terms of comfortability, it considers all diners’ leg space in particular. The legs have an X-design, which allows everyone to reap the benefits of unobstructed legroom. Plus, while it comes in walnut, it can come in cherry as well, to better complement the look of any dining room.
No home is complete without chairs, so why not decorate it with both stylish and practical ones? The Sarah Arm Chair is a sleek and sturdy chair, as it has a solid hardwood construction with clean lines.
This particular chair could be placed in any home in nearly any room with ease. This chair offers stunning armrests as well to befit your comfortability and relaxation. There is even an option for a Sarah chair without armrests if that is something you would prefer. Either way, these types of chairs could easily provide your home with extra flairs of clean style and comfort.
Now let’s venture back to the bedroom and its furniture requirements. Have you considered adding a sturdy wooden bed frame to your bedroom set? If not, you should certainly start because this is a definitive and stunning piece to add to nearly any bedroom.
The Monterey queen-sized bed is made of solid cherry hardwood with several finish options. It has a modern and refined style that any bedroom would be complete with.
When you are considering adding Copeland furniture to any room in your home, you should consider the above five options and our other options as well! No matter what you’re looking for to further improve your home’s look and feel, we have what you’re looking for. Which Copeland furniture piece will you be adding to your home?
]]>So you’re doing a little renovation or remodeling and it’s time to pick out the furniture for your home. Whether this is a project meant for resale or renting capabilities, or it’s your personal family home, it is important to pick out the best possible furniture to give your home the comforting aesthetic that it deserves.
Thayer Coggin has some of the best custom modern furniture that money can buy. Regardless of which room in your house you are redesigning, you’ll need some comfortable seating that also looks elegant. Thayer Coggin furniture is perfect for that exact thing. Lounge chairs, sofas, sectionals, motion seating, and ottomans are all available right here on our site. Depending on what room you’re looking to furnish, one of these options may be the perfect choice for you.
Lounge Chairs
When it comes to lounge chairs, we have some of the most unique and modern designs available. The first type that we have available is a swivel lounge chair that gives you a greater range of motion than other seating options. All of these Thayer Coggin swivel chairs feature extremely recognizable furniture designs. Some of them, like the “Feeling Groovy” swivel chair, were designed by the great Milo Baughman. Milo is considered one of the greatest modern furniture designers to ever live and is believed to be a pioneer in the industry.
Aside from the many different styles of swivel lounging chairs, there are also the Fred Chaise armless chairs available. This was another one of Milo Baughman’s brilliant designs. In 1953 he came up with this mid-century modern classic. This chaise allows you to lay back and relax on a wedged steel leg base. You are able to completely customize your personal Fred Chaise chair with any of our in-house leathers or fabrics and a base of either stainless steel, satin brass, brushed bronze, or a powder coat.
Sofa
Picking out a sofa for your house is always a difficult decision to make because it’s a very large piece of furniture that will make a big impact on the room that you’re furnishing. It won’t just be a major centerpiece for the room, but it will likely see a lot of use as well. You want something that looks great, feels great and will last you a long time. Regardless of which style of sofa you are interested Thayer Coggin has the right one for you.
The size and shape of the room is a major factor in which couch you should be choosing for your room. You should be planning out and measuring exactly where you want your sofa to lie.
The options are endless, and you can rearrange your living room furniture to your liking at any time. You may have space for a love seat and a couple of lounge chairs, or if your room is a bit bigger you can always get a full-sized sofa with an arm off the side. There are also sectionals, both curved and straight, that look amazing and can really transform any room and give it the symmetrical look that everyone strives for.
Adding an Ottoman is also a fine option. Thayer Coggin has brilliant ottomans that can give you a place to rest your feet without taking too much space. Ottomans can be easily rearranged to change up the room in an instant. You can also remove it completely to give the room a different feel. A little change every now and again is always a good thing.
Motion Seating
The last seating option that we’ll discuss is the motion seating furniture we have available. These are for those people that are looking to relax but may not want to sit completely still. These consist of reclining chairs, rocking chairs, and even crosses over into the swivel chair category we talked a bit about already. All of these Thayer Coggin chairs would look brilliant in any home, but with so many options and variants to choose from you can find the one that matches YOUR style perfectly.
A recliner is a perfect option for anyone who’s looking to sit back and relax. Whether you’re reading a book, watching some tv, or taking a nap, a reclining chair is the number one choice for pure relaxation in your living room. It’s also a great multi-purpose seating option because you can just keep it un-reclined when you have guests over. It’s formal when you need it to be and becomes a lounging option when you need it to be.
Lastly, we have rocking chairs. Rocking chairs have been around for ages. You’ve probably seen wooden rocking chairs sitting on front porches since you were an infant. However, these rocking chairs are a little different. Thayer Coggin rocking chairs are one of a kind. With foam and fiber seats and back, these chairs are luxurious and comfy. Arms are available in stainless steel, much different than your average wooden rocking chair.
Choosing Which Thayer Coggin Furniture is Best for You
One of these seating options is perfect for your home, which one depends on which room you’re furnishing. If you’re you’re choosing decor from your living room, that’s likely one of the first rooms that your guests will see when entering your home. So, making a good first impression should be your primary concern.
Luckily, making a good first impression is easy when you’re adding Thayer Coggin furniture to your home. Every single piece of furniture that they produce has a modern design that can only improve the look and feel of a room. This is all thanks to brilliant minds like Milo Baughman.
If you’re interested in adding some Thayer Coggin furniture to your home you can find it right here on our site. Spruce up your living room with a nice sectional couch or sofa. Embrace comfortability with a reclining chair or lounge chair. Give a little extra room to rest your feet with an ottoman or rock and relax with one of their unique rocking chairs. Whichever you decide, you can’t go wrong.
]]>Here at Ohio Hardwood Furniture, we have made it abundantly clear that we are based on a few guiding principles. Among them are a commitment to sustainability, cultivating worker satisfaction by encouraging an emphasis on quality, handmade, hand-finished furniture using proven, time-tested techniques, and the use of quality, sustainable materials - notably native hardwood stock.
These commitments are evident in the furniture that we produce here in-house, from the quartersawn white oak armoires to beautiful, bright cherry nightstands. Everything we produce is unexampled and unmatched by our competitors, right down into the details.
All the same, we have welcomed a variety of other furniture designers into our catalog of home furnishings, with highlights from Thayer Coggin, Copeland Furniture, Wesley Hall, Leathercraft, Hubbardton Forge, and others. These fine furniture producers have something in common, outside of the fact that they are committed to producing furniture arrangements that are unrivaled for character, class, and comfort: many of them are located in the Mecca of furniture production right here in the United States.
With the notable exception of Copeland, which is located in Vermont, many of our featured brands in furniture hail from the mountainous area of Western North Carolina, where many of the nation’s (and the world’s) finest furniture producers are headquartered.
What’s missing from the above list is Our House Designs, which, like many of the others, is nestled at home right in the foothills of North Carolina. Don’t let the name fool you; welcoming and approachable as it is, Our House Designs is its own maker, but we’re proud, nonetheless, to feature them in our online showroom.
Our House Designs: Making a Name for Itself
Our House Designs, located in Hickory, North Carolina, represents many of the central tenets that typify the other designers we feature here at Ohio Hardwood Furniture, ranging alongside other greats like Thayer Coggin and Wesley Hall - with which they share their home state.
Like our own designs and those of our other partners, Our House Designs are made entirely in the United States by skilled craftsmen that have devoted their lives to their labors. Each and every piece of furniture is entirely benchmade right here in America using proven techniques and nothing but the finest, high-end raw materials.
Our House Designs feature construction of solid frames constructed from hardwood stock and 8-way hand-tied seating, for the utmost in durability and comfort. The cushions they pair with their seating are also made in the United States and unrivaled for durability, support, and of course, comfort.
As for upholstery, Our House Designs have carved out an immutable name for itself by creating completely unique silhouettes and finishing them with nothing but the finest fabrics and leathers that prudence and dedication can source. Each of their pieces can be further complemented with their designer wood finishes and other accenture.
Made for You, According to You
While we offer some floor models here at Ohio Hardwood Furniture, much of the value in Our House Designs echoes that provided by our other partners - which is in the value of customization.
Furniture, like art, is unique to a setting and entirely one of a kind. Some would even argue that furniture is art. For our part, we would front that argument. Therefore, you can’t simply buy “stock” furniture and use it to create a sense of personality. That must be arranged in accordance with the needs of the setting.
While Our House Designs offers a range of pre-made furniture silhouettes, there is quite a bit of variety among them, and each of them can be further customized to your setting by the artful implementation of one of their custom wood finishes, upholstery options, and even hardware.
Their commitment to personalization leaves no stone unturned. You can make the setting with bright, uplifting, glossy wood or toned down, scaled back weathered finishes; the same can be said of the variety in color, texture, and character offered by their leathers and fabrics. Completing the image is the ability to customize with hardware.
No effect is unexplored and Our House Designs is committed to creating a sense of harmony and personality for your home - you just need to take the initiative to help them create it.

]]>Sometimes renovation can be difficult for even the most experienced home designers. The name of the game is to find high-quality furniture that can match the proposed aesthetic that you’re interested in while staying under budget. That’s easier said than done, however.
Things get more difficult depending on the number of rooms you are looking to furnish. If you’ve just bought a new home or are simply looking to renovate your existing home you’ll need furniture that can establish an overall theme or style throughout your entire home. Each room should be unique enough to stand on its own, but still, be able to play a role in a much larger picture.

Where To Begin
When decorating or renovating your home, it may be difficult to know where to start. Well, sometimes it’s easier to break it down by room. If you have a completely empty house that you’re looking to fill up then it may be easy to go through and decide which room is going to be used for which purpose. You probably already have a good idea of where each thing is going. Luckily Leathercraft makes furniture that will look beautiful in almost any room in your house. Let’s keep it simple and go through each room that you may be furnishing in your home.
Living Room
When it comes to picking out furniture for your home, one of the most important rooms in the house is the family room, also known as the living room. It’s called that because it’s the most “lived-in” room of the house. Usually, this is also the first room that your guests will see when entering your house unless you have a front porch or unique house structure. You’ll want to make sure that your indoor decor leaves a good and lasting first impression.
A living room should feel cozy and you’ll nice comfortable furniture for your family and friends to be able to relax. The first and most important part of your living room is knowing the layout that you want. Many families have a tv in their living room so that they can relax on the couch and watch their favorite games, shows, and movies. You may instead have a fireplace or a bookcase, and choose to use your living room as a space to chit-chat with friends when they come around.
Whatever, it is that you decide to use your living room for, you’ll need to find the perfect furniture to accommodate for that. The first thing you should think about is a couch. Once you’ve measured your room and know the size and position that you’d like it in, you’re ready to pick out the perfect Leathercraft couch for you. From their Livingston sofa to their Garland sofa, Leathercraft Furniture produces nothing, but quality couches.
If you want something with a slightly unique and elegant design you may be interested in their Denton sofa, but it’s all a matter of preference. There are also sectional sofas available if you have the room for them. These allow you to have many guests over without having to make space or divide people into separate rooms. Not to mention, they’re comfortable enough to curl up and fall asleep on if the movie you’re watching runs too long.
Apart from the sofa, if there are any chairs or ottomans that you may need for your family room then Leathercraft has you covered. Recliners, love seats, and swivel chairs are all excellent additions to a living room. They are all excellent pieces of furniture that allow you to relax with a bit more solitude than that of a full sofa.
Office
Now more than ever it’s important to have an office in your home. After the world virtually shut down for a year, many people started working from home and home offices have become more popular than ever. If you have a spare bedroom in your home that you’re looking to turn into an office you’ll need some quality furniture to pull it off.
If you’re going to be working an 8-hour shift from your home you want a chair that is both comfortable and presentable. Leathercraft office chairs are top of the line. They produce a Hutton executive chair that is durable, able to spin around, and just looks amazing overall. Many of these rooms today contain a bar. If you need furniture for your bar area in your home, we have Leathercraft bar stools available that will exceed any expectations that you have. Both, the Hugh bar stool and the Edwards bar stool are excellent choices and can match any bar that you’ve installed in your home.
The Leathercraft Hugh bar stool is a very sleek option with exposed Maple. This is a very formal option, but not too formal that it can’t be comfortable. It’s well-rounded and can serve a variety of different purposes. The Edwards bar stool has more rounded cushions and gives off more fun and playful energy. It would look great at anybody’s bar or game room.
Dining Room
The dining room is an important area of the home. It is where you can gather as a family, eat your meals, and tells stories and chat about your day. When it comes to furnishing a dining room, most people don’t want anything too flashy. You can’t go wrong with something simple and sweet.
Obviously, the thing that a dining room is used for the most is… you guessed it, dining. However, to do that you’ll need some fine dining chairs to go around your dining room table. Leathercraft dining chairs are fairly unique compared to usual dining chairs.
The first thing that sets them apart is the fact that they have built-in leather cushions. Many dining chair sets are completely wooden, or wooden with the option of adding a cushion. Leathercraft’s leather dining chairs are comfy and feature interesting designs.
Like their bar stools, Leathercraft also has Hugh dining chairs. There is also a Hugh dining bench option as well, which can be a really cute addition to any dining area in your home. The other option is the Leathercraft Willem dining chair, which is just s a stunning piece of furniture. These chairs are all about customization. From the upholstery to the nail trim, every piece of this piece of furniture is entirely designed by you, for a truly one-of-a-kind dining chair.
Study
Everybody needs a place to get away, even if that getaway is only a room away. Many people manage to escape by reading a book in their study. Having a relaxing area to lounge around and forget your troubles is a major convenience and to truly give it the vibe you’re looking for you’ll need the proper high-quality furniture.
There are two things that every private study needs. Some peace and quiet so that you can enjoy your favorite book and a next-level recliner or swivel rocking chair. Whether you’re working on a project for school or work, reading something you thoroughly enjoy or writing a paper you couldn’t care less about, you will need to get that done.
Anyone who has kids or whose significant other has friends stop over unexpectedly knows that there are times where you may need to escape noise to either get some work done. Sometimes you just may need a second to breathe and with the addition of some Leathercraft furniture, you can turn a room into your own private study and get just that.
What’s good about a study is almost any piece of Leathercraft furniture will work well in there. If you have a vision in mind, roll with it and pick out the piece of furniture that fits best. It all depends on the placement that you like and how much room you have to work with. A love seat can look great up against a wall or next to a bureau or bookcase. Or a nice Kellan Wing chair may be an excellent choice as well.
The classic choice for a study, library, or anywhere you plan on lounging around is a recliner. The Leathercraft recliners are all top-notch. The Leathercraft Blakely recliner is truly a luxurious piece of furniture that you can imagine sitting by a fireplace in any old movie. Similarly, the swivel chairs are also a legendary option. Leathercraft has a Bradley swivel rocker that can recline as well as swivel. You can get the best world and relax however you feel like it on any given day.

Have you noticed that the pattern of the wood’s grain became more or less evident, or even bright, depending on the incidence of the light that struck it, or how you viewed it?
Perhaps you have noticed this effect elsewhere, such as in a beautiful wooden portrait frame or in the construction of an antique muzzleloader’s stock. Sometimes the appearance varies, and the impression of the wood lends itself more to small, rounded bubbles of light and dark areas rather than stripes or streaks. Nonetheless, these are the signature marks of a beautiful type of wood that is affectionately known as tiger maple, and it can be the key to a renewed interest in the interior design of your home. It is certainly enjoying something of a renaissance throughout the rest of the country.
What Is Tiger Maple?
Tiger maple is actually not a misnomer, as it is a figure of wood that sometimes presents itself in maple. Maple, which is typically beautiful and light, is sometimes present in a form that creates lines that transect the grain, producing the familiar patterns. It is called figured, or highly figured, because it is an aspect of the wood that is not actually a part of the grain itself.
An interesting fact about this type of figuring in wood is that it runs perpendicular to the grain, as opposed to parallel to, or with it. The long stripes that are typical of this pattern in maple do not run with the grain, which is why they are frequently present in strips that run across the thinnest portion of a piece of the wood.
The effect is produced when the growth of the wood fibers is distorted in some way or other, which results in the patterning that then becomes known as tiger maple. What’s interesting is that there is no single factor that results in the formation of this figuring, and there is no genetic difference between the Red Maples that produce a tiger pattern and those that do not.
This is one of the factors that has influenced the value of tiger or curly maple - that it cannot be easily or cheaply reproduced. One of the central features of tiger or flame maple is in chatoyancy, which is one of the characteristics of the figuring that adds depth to the overall impression created by the wood.
Chatoyancy? What Is That?
The figuring produced by tiger maple is said to possess chatoyancy, or to be chatoyant. This, corrupted from the French for “cat’s eye,” is another term that is said to describe the effects.
Often reserved as a descriptor for gemstones, chatoyancy is a type of reflectance that is exhibited by certain fibrous materials. Chatoyancy can be described as a certain type of sheen, shine or reflectivity, but this does not paint the entire picture. For a material to be truly considered chatoyant, it must not only be reflective, but the light reflected must run perpendicular to the fibers that produce the effect, resulting in a streak of light that travels in an odd direction with respect to the apparent grain of the material.
For reference, see the picture of Tiger’s Eye in which this chatoyant effect is evident, and for which the material is probably best known. It is this effect that is also produced in the figuring of Tiger Maple, which adds a layer of complexity to the items produced from it - despite their many names.
A Rose by Any Other Name
Tiger maple is not simply known by the former appellation, and there are actually several distinct forms of patterning that may be associated with it.
A Short History of Tiger Maple and Its Applications
Tiger maple wood has a rich history of use in the United States and has become associated with Appalachia because of the prevalence of its use to create furniture, tools, and decorations in that region.
Although the supply of tiger or flame maple fluctuates and is subject to a variety of factors that will affect its availability, it has a long history of use throughout the United States. Colonial furniture producers and woodworkers prized the wood for its durability and beauty, and no collection of colonial furniture would be complete without one entry produced from curly maple.
This unique pattern of wood has also been used widely in the production of Kentucky rifles and other muzzleloaders. It is not altogether rare to see period flintlocks from the Appalachian region with brindle stocks made from curly maple. These stocks are both hard and strong, making them ideal for the application. They are also very handsome, and the practice has persisted to the modern day - many replica flintlocks and cap locks are still produced with brindle stocks that are the signature of curly maple.
This type of wood is also prized for its value in the manufacture of a variety of instruments, including but not limited to guitars and violins. This latter use has garnered curly maple another moniker, being fiddle maple, due to its prevalence among these musical instruments. It’s also worth noting that some critics believe this type of maple to produce variance in sound, and to be superior to other grades of wood for its acoustic properties.
However, far and away, if it can be said that tiger maple is popular for one thing, and if there is one industry that supports its economic viability, it is the furniture industry. Americans are searching for curly maple in droves because it adds depth and movement to their interior designs, as well as a tangibly American character.
How You Can Design and Decorate with Tiger Maple
If you’re looking for a unique way to decorate your home that will give it at once a dashing sense of character and a modest nod to the historical import of regional colonial design, then tiger maple may be just the best way to do so.
There is simply no way to separate this beautiful wood from its central role in the production of uniquely American designs, and it’s enjoying more popularity now than ever. Best of all, there are a variety of ways in which you can work tiger or curly maple furniture and decorations into the design of your home,
Staples: Chairs, Tables, Bookcases and Other Fixtures
Tiger maple produces an effect the gravity of which is impossible to deny. Whereas all woods are beautiful in their own right, due to their natural personalities, the movement and depth of curly maple are unlike anything else we can offer up.
Because of this, the best way to make a mark in a setting is to create a focus with a defining piece of furniture. Curly maple is not meant to serve as an accent mark. It can make its most pronounced expressions as the centerpiece of a location.
You can really make a setting shine with the tasteful addition of a hutch, a bookcase, or a chest made of curly maple, and remember that there are all different patterns and designs you can find in this type of wood. If you don’t believe that a flame pattern would suit your setting well, you could instead seek out the effervescent levity of a similar piece of furniture in a quilt maple or bird’s eye pattern.
Similarly, you can outfit a setting with a dining table or a set of chairs that have been created from curly maple, but allow us to suggest first that you see that the table top has been produced from curly maple, as this large, flat surface will make the greatest impression. The sad truth is that the fine workings of a chair or the legs of some other piece of furniture might lack the commanding presence necessary to advertise the wood, losing the detail of the pattern in deference to the detail of their workmanship.
You can also specifically seek out a smaller item like an end table or a coffee table to make a mark with flame maple, despite the fact that these pieces would likely be smaller and less commanding than their larger counterparts. Not to worry, though - made with a bright, beautiful wood-like curly maple, even these fixtures of decor will draw attention to themselves.
Don’t Miss a Chance to Throw in the Highlights
Finally, if we can offer one gem of wisdom, it’s not to lose sight of the fact that even if you can’t make a piece of tiger maple furniture the fixture of a setting, there are infinite possibilities for decoration using this type of wood. Don’t forget that you can find a variety of decorations, ornaments, and other items crafted from curly maple as well.
For example, if you can’t find a piece of furniture that properly matches the rest of the aesthetic in a given setting, strive instead to work curly maple into the setting some other way. If you can find a wall ornament or other sculpture crafted from it, you’ll get the shine and movement in another package, albeit smaller.
Another great way to work curly maple into a setting, if you can’t find a piece of furniture that suits your tastes, is to use it to frame your artwork - literally. You may be able to find a tasteful curly maple frame that will beautifully array your finest wall art - serving as a literal fixture of a setting and breathing its character into the very atmosphere of the room. In fact, this is an advisable practice to follow even if you can find a large item made of curly maple - it plays off of itself beautifully.

No collection of designer furniture would be complete without Copeland Furniture, and for better or worse, that name is firmly entrenched in the admiration of those who love fine furniture and rare quality. While we can’t give an objective analysis of what makes a furniture producer good or bad, we can say that Copeland, like many of the others that we feature here on our website and in our showroom, stands on a history of producing uncommon quality, and promises to do so for long into the future.
There are many reasons that we love Copeland Furniture, and we are confident that given the right introduction, you will, too. Even if your personal tastes don’t align too closely with their unique, somewhat Scandinavian, somewhat contemporary, somewhat mid-century modern, even minimalist designs, we firmly believe you will come to appreciate them for what they do well. That is, they produce some of the highest quality hardwood furniture in the country that is impressively possessed of character, despite its minimalist nature.
These are some of the things that we love about Copeland, and we’re sure that you will too. Who knows; there might even be a Copeland design just waiting for you to discover it in our online catalog.
A Succinct History of Copeland Furniture
Copeland Furniture stands on an illustrious, yet somehow humble history. The history of Copeland can be traced back nearly half a century, to the early 1970s. At that time, Copeland was an incipient idea that was many decades away from the commanding, impressive name that it is today.
Originally, Copeland was an agricultural operation, which is fitting given the lay of the country that surrounded their origins. Vermont is a state that places a great deal of pride on its agrarian heritage. To those who call the Green Mountain Republic home, this isn’t just about history. It is a facet of life in their state that they promote and embellish with pride. Still today, Vermont boasts of an agricultural tradition that is larger than life. For many residents, it is life.
Copeland got its start making cider presses for local orchards in its area, before graduating into other areas of design in furniture. From functional, dependable cider presses to equally functional and viable items of furniture whose main emphasis was on providing families with an affordable yet attractive way to furnish their homes. Yet even in small local markets like those that are present in Vermont, it is only a matter of time before talent gains its due recognition.
Growth may have been slow at first but it was steady. From those early designs in porch furniture and other simplicities, Copeland continued to proliferate into furniture designs for the rest of the home. Today, Copeland Furniture occupies a modern manufacturing facility in Bradford, Vermont, along the Connecticut River.
Copeland is still a homegrown name, but despite its deceptively simple origins, it is a brand that has become a recognizable household name throughout much of the country, especially of those with an affinity for fine furnishings.
Designs That Defy Categorization
Categorizing Copeland Furniture is an exercise in critical thinking, and it could open a truly Socratic discourse. Despite the fact that their furniture really can be called objectively simple - in at least some sense - it does not neatly fit into any category.
Spend enough time as a casual critic of the finest in the country’s current designs in furniture and you’ll be able to recognize Copeland from a far, and metaphorically blindfolded. Their furniture is defined by simple lines and harsh angles, a general lack of ostentatious ornamentation, and gracefully sloping legs that drive away from the design and almost serve as lines of perspective to drive your interest to the natural character of the native hardwoods from which they create their furniture.
It is recognizable, true enough, and there is a gist to their character that can be keyed in with relative ease. However, their designs have been called variously Scandinavian, Minimalist, Mid-Century Modern, Contemporary, Arts & Crafts, and more. In its own way, Copeland Furniture is indicative of each of these schools of design, and in its own intrepid way, it continues to defy succinct categorization.
Take for example a short description of what most would agree can apply to Scandinavian furniture, which is one of the schools of design to which Copeland has been likened. Scandinavian furniture can be recognized by its clean designs and simple lines. There is a general lack of ornamentation in Scandinavian design, and often bare wood is presented and stands on its own merits. Rarely is there any additional decoration to speak of.
Scandinavian design, for example, has become increasingly popular in the United States for a few big reasons. Among the most significant of them is that the furniture does not overwhelm the senses with excessive details and florid design. The other reason is that this simplicity itself is highly compatible with a number of other designs because there are no distinct elements of style in Scandinavian design (or very few) that would clash with other schools.
In many ways, these observations could be made of Copeland Furniture, but it still would not provide a complete analysis. Copeland can be called minimalistic, and it does have clean lines. Even the legs of most Copeland Furniture, with their graceful yet sharp angles, are very Scandinavian. However, there is a richness in the tones of the wood used that is somewhat defiant of Scandinavian style. Perhaps that is more mid-century modern or avant-garde. Nonetheless, it is a simple style and the beauty arises from that very simplicity.
No small part of the intrigue associated with Copeland’s designs is due to this lack of easy categorization. It is this pleasant ambiguity that makes their furniture so widely appealing and so easy to incorporate into so many different settings.
Style and Intrigue for Every Room in the House
Another thing that we love about Copeland is that their catalog is so diverse and includes so many opportunities to outfit every room in your house. From a small-scale producer of agricultural implements to one of the country’s premier producers of furniture for the entire house, Copeland’s influence has grown monumentally in scope. In addition, it is the fact that they defy categorization that makes them so widely applicable in so many different settings. From being neither too much of one thing nor too much of the other, they have increased their ability to produce universally pleasing designs.
There are very few interior design schemes - very few - that will openly clash with the simple, yet elegant designs of Copeland Furniture. Because of their minimalistic overtones, Copeland designs are both demure enough to melt into the background yet simply pleasing enough to take the center of attention - if that is what you want for them. Copeland gives conscientious homeowners the ability to work their designs into every room in the house, and that versatility is present throughout everything that they create.
For the bedroom, Copeland produces a wide range of bedroom sets, including beds, nightstands, chests of drawers, night shelves and much more. Just as with their other wood products, their wood bedroom furniture is simple but elegant in a way that is difficult to describe. It’s funny that a picture could say a thousand words about something so blatantly simplistic, and yet it is true. They are better visually assessed than verbally described.
Copeland also produces a wealth of other high-quality, solid hardwood designs for the rest of the house, including for the living room and the dining room. Those looking for a refresh for their current design scheme will be well served by the simple variety of Copeland dining room tables and chairs, coffee tables, end tables, and other furniture. With the right insight and experience, you can outfit nearly any room in your home with Copeland, and your home will accommodate those changes with grace and poise.
Customizable Designs in America’s Finest Hardwoods
There is something else that we love about Copeland Furniture, and we are not alone in the assessment. Homeowners and designers around the country sign Copeland’s praises for it as well - like many modern furniture producers, they offer their customers the value of customizations.
While their designs in furniture themselves are somewhat standardized, Copeland makes it easy for its customers to create their vision in the hardwood of their choice. That’s no small matter, when you consider that there is such a difference between the appearance of woods like solid walnut, cherry or ash.
That doesn’t even speak to the quality, although the quality is there. There is no comparison between furniture that is made from choice, solid hardwoods using proven techniques and any alternative. In this instance, the key difference is in visual appeal.
But Copeland does not simply provide its customers the ability to customize their furniture with a variety of choices in hardwoods. They also provide their customers the option of customizing with a variety of different stains as well. If the wood does not offer it in its native character, Copeland will stain the furniture in the color of your choice. In that way, you can suit not only the design but also the color to nearly any setting.
Representing the Finest in American Heritage
If there’s one more reason to make the most of the finest designs in furniture that Copeland can supply, it’s because Copeland has been influenced by American heritage and tradition and is a true native son of American design.
Producing furniture from the wealth of native hardwood stock that has been available here has been a tradition for hundreds of years and something that can be witnessed in showrooms and museums across the country. These traditions have been heavily influenced by European schools and by other cultures, but there are unique American traditions that have arisen from the mixture of these elements.
That may be one of the reasons that it is so difficult to categorize Copeland. It is at one time both an idyllic representation of the history of producing furniture in America and also a unique fixture of its own inspiration. Make no mistake about this message, though - Copeland has been a staple of American furniture designs for half a century and it will continue to color the American spirit of furniture design for long into the future. If that simple hardwood construction appeals to you, then you will delight in Copeland Furniture.
Standing for Values that Matter
Copeland Furniture, like many of the other manufacturers that we represent in our showrooms, is, as they say, green furniture. They use sustainably harvested hardwoods from North American forests and are committed to doing the best for the environment from which they sustain their operations.
Their hardwoods come from the American Northern Forests and most of the wood they use comes from within their vicinity, minimizing their impact not only on the forests from which they make their living but also on the greater supply chain that must in part support it. Copeland is also variously awarded and certified, having been awarded the Silver Exemplary Membership by the Sustainable Furnishings Council and the Sage Award. Their finishes are also GREENGUARD Gold Certified - tested for over 10,000 known harmful chemicals, and guaranteed safe.
Just like so many of the other manufacturers, we laud - and our own operation, Copeland is a leader in this arena. You can outfit your home with pride and poise when you choose Copeland designs for your interior decorating, and you’ll be doing good for the environment as well.

Some things off the beaten path are worth discovering, and we’re confident our showroom in Peninsula, Ohio is one of them!
]]>We at Ohio Hardwood Furniture care deeply about environmentally sustainable practices, just as much as we care about the quality of the furniture that we produce and sell. We believe that the two traits, being sustainability and quality, can be artfully merged and are not mutually exclusive to each other.
That’s why we are so firmly committed to sustainability in our own practices. The native hardwood stock that we harvest to create our own designs is allowed to grow up to ten years in some instances before it is harvested. In production, we make use of every part of the tree. What doesn’t get categorically transformed into furniture becomes fuel in the form of firewood, bedding for livestock, or even mulch.
These are only some of the practices that we have implemented to ensure that our place in our environment represents harmony instead of extortion. By committing to these responsible practices, we’re doing our part to ensure that the resources we use are available for future generations to use, and keeping the ecosystems from which we take those resources healthier as well.
We’re not the only ones who do it. Many of our partners, which represent a cross-section of the most successful and highly lauded furniture producers in the country, are as interested in preserving their landscapes as we are.
One such producer whose designs have been acclaimed across the country is Charleston Forge Furniture. Their organization sets the bar for sustainability in furniture, and here’s how they do it, and why it matters.
Why Sustainability Matters in Furniture
It’s easy to see how measures that impact sustainability in some industries have a net positive impact on the environment and on business in general. In some other areas, the correlation is harder to draw. Some might find this to be the case, for example, in the foodservice industry. Single-use plastics like straws and plates are commonly used, and after they’re used, they work their way to landfills and waterways. An attempt to reduce the use of plastics and paper goods can have an immediate impact on that business’s effects on the environment.
With a furniture supplier, the effects might not be as apparent. To understand them, it might help to take a step back and to keep the bigger picture in mind. Much furniture, after all, is produced from wood that is a product of and must be harvested from the environment. In short, here’s how sustainability matters, even in the furniture industry.
Responsible sourcing and harvesting of timber have a profound effect on the environments from which it is taken. Consider that the trees in the forest are part of a complex and diverse ecosystem. They are not only not the only living things in the forest, but all of the lives therein are interrelated.
A single tree is itself alive, and a unique individual that comprises a small part of the entire ecosystem. That tree, however, is also alive with a vibrant host of microorganisms, bacteria, and fungi. Those microorganisms and fungi give rise to symbiotic relationships with insects and other living beings that in turn feed the larger organisms within the forest. Many of these, such as birds, treefrogs, and arboreal mammals, might actually live, feed and reproduce right within the space of that very tree.
This drawn-out, colorful representation of the woods is not meant to instill a feeling of bucolic reverence, only to illustrate that harvesting so much as a single tree has a severe impact on the environment from which the tree is taken. Harvesting in cycles and allowing trees to mature and areas to recover before being harvested again all do their part to secure and ensure the health of the greater ecosystem.
The fuels that furniture producers use to power their offices and workspaces, or their tools, will also come down to the bottom line of sustainability. That’s why some producers use wood to heat their shops and choose to use skilled human labor instead of automating a process.
Sometimes bench-made furniture that has been made by a skilled pair of human hands is more expensive, but it can also cut back on the bottom line of pollution.
Remember also that furniture, like many other goods, must be packaged, cushioned, and protected during shipment, and often after it gets to its final location. All of these packaging materials are really only useful in transport and end up in the trash after the furniture has been shipping to its final destination.
Some manufacturers use eco-friendly shipping materials and packaging, but many others use plastic and papers that either cannot be recycled effectively or are cheaper to throw away than to buy anew. It should come as no surprise that when these materials are used, despite the fact that they are not central to the production process itself, will end up making their way to landfills and waterways.
When a furniture producer commits to utilizing sustainable practices and cutting back on waste, the overall net impact on the environment is positive. Extra human labor instead of electrically automated processes, the use of propane instead of natural gas, a shortening of the supply chain, and the use of more eco-friendly materials and finishes all contribute to the health of the environment and at length, the world.
How Charleston Forge Furniture Does It
Charleston Forge is no stranger to eco-friendly practices and the organization has implemented quite a range of measures with the end goal of cutting back on waste and minimizing all foreseeable adverse impacts on the environment.
Notably, the following are some of the measures or practices that they have enacted, along with how they help.
Charleston Forge Furniture is known for one thing above all others. It is known for its unique, rugged, rustic, unapologetic designs. Call them inspired by the beautiful landscape of the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina wherein the company and its operations are located if you will, but the case is that Charleston Forge produces some of the most beautiful furniture of America.
Much of their furniture makes artful use of hand-wrought iron or steel and native hardwood stock. If you visit their operation, you’re likely to see a craftsman forging hot metal or hand planing a solid wood tabletop.
Speaking of that, Charleston Forge is committed not only to making sure that you can feel a sense of hand-made craftsmanship in every piece of furniture. They’re also committed to using resources wisely.
In this instance, wood can be grown and regrown, but metal cannot. It must be mined and refined. Charleston Forge takes great pride in the fact that they use recycled metals in the production of their furniture, producing art from what would otherwise have been wasted. They also are diligent in recycling scraps of metal that they can’t repurpose into furniture.
Much of the wood that becomes Charleston Forge Furniture is harvested from the hills of the surrounding Appalachian Mountains. That’s right in their backyard, which actually produces a number of benefits. In this specific instance, the case is that the forest regenerates itself at a significantly faster rate than the rate at which it is currently being harvested, which is good for all parties involved.
The USDA has certified that for every tree harvested from the region in question, 2.9 trees currently grow in its stead. That helps to produce a net positive rate of growth for the region. There are nearly 3 trees to every one that is taken, with more growing every year.
It’s also nice that the region is home to choice hardwoods that Charleston Forge uses in its furniture, including but not limited to maple and walnut.
Charleston Forge Furniture has also committed to utilizing the most environmentally friendly finishes possible. In this specific instance, they have taken steps to ensure that the powder-coat finish they use on their steel and iron that protects it from corrosion and gives it a rustic appeal is less harmful than many other common wet techniques. It also contains no harmful solvents that would make their way into the atmosphere or environment.
Charleston Forge also recognizes that it is not only how they produce their furniture that matters, but also what other steps they take as an organization that can and will impact the environment. Consequently, they have chosen to utilize propane as a fuel for heating their facilities instead of natural gas. Propane is more efficient than natural gas and it also burns more cleanly releasing fewer harmful compounds as a result.
While plastic gets the lion’s share of attention for its adverse effects on the environment, it is not the only culprit. Paper pollution is actually a lot worse than most people realize. For one thing, since cardboard is made from largely organic materials, it does biodegrade, which itself is a good thing; the catch is that it produces a lot of methane as it does, increasing the overall concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
The more cardboard used in packaging, the worse it is for the environment because each piece of cardboard corresponds to wood pulp that would have to be harvested from the environment as well. Charleston Forge utilizes an on-demand packaging system that enables them to custom-cut each box, cutting back significantly on waste.
Finally, Charleston Forge has been a leader in cutting back on transportation-related pollution. Not only do they source most of their wood locally, but most of their other suppliers are in their area, too, cutting back on fossil fuel use and other issues associated with a lengthy and tenuous supply chain.
This is great news for Charleston Forge because it saves money, but it also helps to limit the pollutants that are released into the atmosphere. It’s one thing that it’s necessary to transport furniture to the homes and businesses of their customers around the country; that much can’t be helped.
What can be helped is where they get their raw materials, and they have optimized their processes by leaps and bounds, cutting back on transportation-based costs and pollution. The entire initiative has a net positive effect, both in terms of resources wasted and pollutants released.

]]>The title says it all. Actually, the title only says some of it, but it’s powerful enough to stand on its own. Customizability is the chief reason to add Leathercraft Furniture to your home. There are others, among them being the objective quality of craftsmanship, emphasis on class and distinction, and of course, comfort.
At Ohio Hardwood Furniture we place the highest emphasis imaginable on the quality of the furniture we sell and on the nature of the processes we promote and utilize. In few of our partners are processes and finished products united as admirably as they are in Leathercraft Furniture.
Additionally, we place a high emphasis on the value of aesthetics. As important as objective quality and craftsmanship are, they are best completed with beautiful aesthetics. This, paired with an endless array of options for customizing their furniture, makes Leathercraft a staple of our catalog.
Luckily, Leathercraft Furniture can be customized down to the finish of the wood. Whether you’re looking for something with the dark and brooding tones of ebony or the regal, stately nature of brown cherry, there’s a finish in their catalog that will provide a beautiful match for your home.
These are both pleasant trimmings, in their own right; they simply are not pleasant in each other's company. Whereas one is polished, refined, and elegant, the other is warm and rustic, perhaps even antiquarian. They’re beautiful separately but they clash when they’re together.
The issue here doesn’t come from one piece of furniture having a mish-mash of different trims. It comes from having several pieces of furniture in a room with different trimmings. Luckily, that’s something that you can customize on Leathercraft Furniture as well.
In addition to leather, you can also customize Leathercraft with a wide range of different fabrics. Whether you want your seating to stand out from the rest of the room or match with the carpet or curtains, you can easily execute your vision with Leathercraft. They build that right into their model.
These and other reasons make Leathercraft one of the prime options at your disposal for the decoration of your home, ranging alongside the other top makers in our catalog such as Thayer Coggin, McKinley Leather, Copeland Furniture, and Wesley Hall.
Sometimes what you really need for your home is a piece of furniture that compliments the setting, and nothing compliments a setting like a truly unique, custom piece. Please visit our collections via the links above to learn more about our offerings, and of course, give us a call at 33-657-2095 if you have any questions. The customizations of which we’ve spoken here complement those that we can create for you in our own line of furniture; to learn more about that contact us!
What we’d really love is for you to visit us in-store, however. While we’re a little off of the path (we’re located in Peninsula, Ohio) we’re of the belief that things that need a little effort for discovery are worth them. We like to think of ourselves as Ohio’s best-kept secret; come on in and get really familiar with our unique designs the next time you’re in our neighborhood!

Some designs, like colonial furnishing and architecture, have become timeless by this point. Others are iconic of a time that is lost to the past but remain recognizable and popular, even though their names have become ironic.
One of the more popular design trends - and one that is growing in popularity - is the trend of producing live edge furniture, notably live edge tables like live edge dining tables. While it may still be too early to tell what the ultimate fate of the live-edge trend will be, we can ride the wave while it lasts.
But for those of you that are reading this and are not familiar with the trend, here’s a quick introduction before we dive into a defense of live edge tables for your dining room.
What Is Live Edge?
For those of you who are as yet unfamiliar with what live edge furniture is, a picture might very well say a thousand words. Have you ever seen a table that looks a little bit too much like the tree from which it was made?
You know those tables that have conspicuous, uneven lines and blemishes, and almost look like they have bark on the outside edges? Some of them may actually have bark along the outside edges, but usually, it’s just the uneven marks and the silhouette of the cross-section of a tree.
These slabs produce furniture that is known as live edge furniture. Usually, wood is milled into boards, posts, slats, panels, and other more recognizable geometric pieces that are then worked into furniture. These shapes, obviously, don’t exist naturally within the tree but are artificially produced.
Live edge takes advantage of the beautiful natural lives of the tree. A cross-section is milled out of a log and preserves the marks, scars, blemishes, and natural contours of the log. Otherwise, these would be effaced during milling and working, but in live edge furniture, they are partially preserved.
Now that you have an impression of what live edge furniture is (though you might have already recognized it by image if not by name) here are some defenses of the trend. These are some of the best reasons to bring a live edge dining table into your home!
Something that you’ll notice right away about live edge dining tables is that no two are entirely alike. In fact, that’s just the nature of the situation. Since live edge tables preserve some of the lines and natural marks of the living tree, each one is like a fingerprint. It’s entirely unique to the tree that produced it.
That could be argued about any piece of wood since each natural slab bears the marks of its marker. Still, it’s much more tangible with a piece of live edge wood than it is with a milled plank. If you’re looking to add a piece of furniture to your dining room that has undeniable character, a live edge table will not disappoint.
Here at Ohio Hardwood Furniture, we place a very strong emphasis on the quality of the furniture we produce as well as on the integrity and quality of the wood we use. We’re proud of the fact that we use proven construction techniques, mill our own hardwoods, and waste no scraps whatsoever.
It’s a necessary thing to note, however, that whether we’ve made the live edge table in question or another producer has, it must necessarily be made with a single slab of wood. If it is genuine, at least, that is.
While some furniture may be made from inferior materials like particleboard or laminated wood, a live edge table - a real one, anyway - must be made from a single, solid milled slab of wood. There is nothing stronger or more beautiful, and when it is properly kiln-dried, a live edge table is truly one of a kind.
Also, for one reason or another, live edge tables have grown in popularity recently. It can’t really be called a new style, although it has garnered something of a contemporary appeal. For whatever reason, the live edge aesthetic has been growing in popularity in recent years.
When a design aesthetic becomes more and more popular, by virtue of its ubiquity, you’ll find that it’s widely compatible with a larger range of other schools of design, which is the case here. It’s easier to work a live edge table into your home’s setting than you might imagine.
There’s something about a live edge table that arrests and commands the attention of all visitors to a scene. Live edge furniture, with its natural lines and unique character, is very difficult to build into a setting without making it a focal point.
It might be possible to do so with a muted little end table, but certainly not with a dining table. When you place that in a setting, it’s sure to serve as the focal point!
On the surface, it doesn’t seem like a live edge table has too much of a traditional flair. It can be easily seen how the argument could be made to the contrary. With their asymmetrical lines and natural blemishes, they’re very apparently contemporary.
The key word above is natural - this is where and how they retain a mote of the traditional. Live edge tables are almost a throwback to designs that are so rustic they belong in a cabin or a camp. The thing is, they are also typically highly refined and beautifully finished.
Few other pieces, or types, of furniture, bring together a blending of the traditional and the contemporary so effortlessly.
Another thing about live edge tables is that they have a very high potential to age beautifully. This ranges alongside other high-quality hardwood furniture such as the other designs we produce here at Ohio Hardwood.
When properly cared for, a live edge table will age gracefully and may even darken slightly with age, lending the table an air of sophistication and dignity.
Caring for a Live Edge Dining Table
In order for you to get that expected long lifespan out of a live edge dining table, like any fine piece of furniture, it’s going to require some care from time to time. Here are some basic tips you can follow to extend the life of your live edge furniture.
Not all live edge furniture retains bark at the edges of the slab. In fact, most probably don't. However, if there is bark there, you need to be particularly careful when seated around the table or when moving it. Bark is living tissue (when the tree is alive) and so it is softer, spongier, and more prone to damage and impact than the rest of the table.
You should never leave stains and liquids on the surface of your tables, whether they are live edge or not. If the table surface is sealed (which is likely) the finish will protect the wood - up to a point.
The thing is, allowing foods, oils, juices, or other liquids will damage the finish over time. Some finishes can be stripped, for example, with citrus juices, which are common in some foods. If the surface gets blotched, stained, or wet, just wipe it down.
Similarly, you don’t want to allow dust, crumbs, or dirt to remain on the surface of the table if you can help it. If they build up, when you wipe them down, they can scratch the surface or the finish, thereby damaging it. The best way to prevent this is by routinely wiping the surface of the table down.
The manner in which the surface of your live edge table will have been finished could vary significantly. For that reason, unfortunately, we can’t give you a catch-all solution for keeping it protected and sealed. When you buy one, ask the seller how the surface has been sealed and ask how you can maintain the protective finish.
You might also want to get into the habit of treating the wood itself, provided you use the right products. There is a wide range of oils, waxes, wood creams, and sealing agents that can be used to varying effects on the surface of raw and treated wood.
You’ll still want to know what you can and can’t use, though, so make sure you ask questions about what products are safe or advisable for use with the furniture in question, live edge, or otherwise.
Pairing Live Edge Furniture
Good news for you if you’re attracted to the undeniably appealing aesthetic of live edge furniture. It pairs beautifully with a wide range of other designs. If you’re thinking about introducing one into your home, here are a couple of suggestions for how to work it into the setting and what to pair with it.
Because live edge furniture maintains some of the appearances of unfinished wood, and of the whole tree, it pairs very well with other rustic furniture, including live edge furniture. If you’re a fan of rustic, country, or camp designs, a live edge table will mesh up with these beautifully.
The pairings themselves don’t even have to be live edge. They can be weathered wood or even the bark-on designs of cabin or camp furniture.
Another interesting way to pair up a live edge dining table is with other traditional, albeit refined, designs. Many live edge tables, despite their general “rustication,” possess any air of high sophistication, and will pair better with classic, timeless designs than with rustic furniture.
Try outfitting a setting with colonial furniture or some other design of that nature and see how it does alongside your live edge arrangement. Our best is it will look great.
You can also pair up live edge tables with modern pieces of furniture to varying effects. There is something about live edge designs that you wouldn’t quite expect to match up with them but does anyway.
For example, you could pair minimalist or even industrial furniture with a live edge table and the pleasant jarring sensation of the juxtaposition would be more amenable than you might expect. Try it, or look up some images online for inspiration to see what we mean.
Finally, if you haven’t been inspired by rustic decor, traditional designs, or even modern minimalism, give mid-century modern a go. Its oddly iconoclastic melding of diverse geometric designs and seemingly incongruous elements come together to create a balance that is, well, not incongruous at all. You may also find that mid-century modern furniture for sale offers designs that create the perfect pairing with live edge furniture. Here on our site, you’ll find collections featuring Thayer Coggin, Leathercraft Furniture, Copeland Furniture, Wesley Hall Furniture, and many others.
Do you still have questions about the care of a live edge table, or how to work one into your home’s setting? We can help with that, but first, you have to visit us or at least give us a call.

]]>In every industry, there are key followers that set the trends and the pace, and there are the leagues that follow them. In other words, there are thought leaders and visionaries, and then there are followers that come after. The industry for fine furniture is no different, and we are lucky here to have some of these visionaries so close at hand.
In the industry for fine furniture, some of these immediately recognizable names are Copeland Furniture, Wesley Hall seating, and Thayer Coggin Furniture. Truthfully, there are so many of them in and around High Point, North Carolina, that any attempt to enumerate them would quickly become a list. We’re lucky to have so many of them so near to us.
Additionally, furniture is one of those categories of luxury items of which, luckily, a large portion is still handmade by skilled artisans. As the greater economy shifts towards automated processes and machine manufacturing, the best furniture in the world is still made by hand, with meticulous attention to detail.
Among them, this company occupies a unique position. It is the cumulative product of one of the most talented artisanal designers that has ever graced the furniture industry: designer Milo Baughman, the founder of Thayer Coggin. His name lives on in their Milo Baughman collection and, of course, in the pioneering designs that originally made the name great - and still continue to do so.
A Short History: Built on Excellence
Much of the history of Thayer Coggin Furniture is the history of the man behind it. Born in 1923 in Goodland, Kansas, Milo Baughman created furniture designs for quite a range of furniture companies in addition to the namesake of this article. Companies such as Pacific Iron, Murray Furniture, and Arch Gordon all owe some of their successes to his insightful vision and prowess.
For Baughman, it started at a young age. When his family moved to California in his youth, he was instrumental in designing both the inside and outside of his family’s new house. During his service in the Armed Forces, he helped to design clubs for official military use.
His education and experience continued with his formal schooling at Chouinard Art Institute, at which he enrolled to pursue studies in architectural design. After college, he began work with a furniture store on the west coast specializing in modern designs. During his tenure there, his designs garnered a lot of attention and his repute and facility with modern furniture design and decoration began to spread.
It was in 1953 when he relocated to North Carolina that Baughman’s influence spread to Thayer Coggin. As they say themselves, “since 1953 Thayer Coggin has carved out a distinct identity” for itself by producing some of the most recognizable furniture designs in the world.
The company is best known for its mid-century modern designs which are both elegant and simplistic at the same time. Their collection of lounge chairs, sofas, sectionals and even dining chairs is distinguishable but the delicate yet pleasant interplay of capacious shapes and thin, contrasting, supporting lines.
Noteworthy not only for their elegant and yet angular, modern aesthetics but for their supreme quality and comfort, their furniture also only makes use of the highest quality materials. Natural hardwood and iron construction underlay the foundation of much of their collection, made better with the inclusion of high-quality foam cushioning that is free of CFCs that are harmful to the environment. High-quality, made with only the most reliable and proven construction techniques and materials and finished with comfort-enhancing cushioning, their furniture has carved out a distinct niche in the home furnishings market.
Customers also love the fact that their designs are also customizable. Naturally, not every stock, floor item is going to match perfectly with the vision of every homeowner. Milo Baughman, as a designer, understood that very well. While the bones of the mystique - that elegant, simple, minimalist aesthetic that underpins all Thayer Coggin furniture - might appeal to you, the finish or the upholstery or the wood might not.
That’s no cause for concern with this collection because topping off their collection is customizability that gives you so much freedom to create a unique sense of identity in the home.
Seating: Comfortable and Elegant
The cornerstone of Thayer Coggin as an entity is the variety of seating arrangements that they provide and have provided for many years. Furniture, in general, presents a unique and practical avenue for imbuing a setting with spirit and making it unique. Seating arrangements, as part of the furnishings of a setting, offer this but an additional facet of value.
Not only does the character of a seating arrangement impact the spirit of the location, but seating itself is a functional category of furniture in a way that other furniture is not. While you may use a hutch for the storage and organization of items, you may place a beverage on a coffee table or you may eat at a table, no other furniture has a sense of personality to the tune of a seating arrangement.
This is due to the very nature of seating. Visitors to a room interact with seating in a manner that is reserved for them only; only a bed can be said to be a more intimate fixture than a sofa or a chair. Each and every fixture of seating possesses its own personality and develops an intimate acquaintanceship with everyone who sits in it.
The way you and other visitors to your home will interact with seating is very personal. Also, over time, a sofa or a chair will age and become a truly unique fixture of the setting. You can’t just get rid of an old piece of furniture and expect to find a near facsimile. That is the kind of feature that has to be earned and can’t simply be bought.
Nonetheless, if it’s comfort you’re looking for, comfort that is evident from the first time you take a seat, their seating will not disappoint you. Check out our collection of Thayer Coggin floor items and if you don’t like what you see there, you can visit our page on Thayer Coggin’s built-to-order designs and have something made especially for you.
Tables, Storage, and Organization
While it’s true enough that every home needs seating, with some rooms having a more pronounced need than others, every home has an equal need for storage and organization. Whenever a furniture maker specializes, it’s a great thing in that it enables them to perfect one art; by the same token, a little bit of proliferation makes it’s easier to match up some distinct designs with others that might not be so easy to match up.
Luckily, Thayer Coggin has balanced specialization and diversification perfectly. While you’d primarily turn to them to outfit your home with novel, extremely comfortable seating arrangements, you can also turn to them for storage and organization that will match perfectly alongside your sofa, sectional or other seating.
Admittedly, it’s never really a chore to match up mid-century modern designs with other aesthetics, since that design trend is so inclusive and accommodating. There are more design schemes that are compatible with that minimalism than there are that are not well suited to it, but nonetheless, being able to source a few pieces of furniture from the same manufacturer makes the entire process even easier.
If you’re looking for a table or a sideboard to make a perfect, minimalist match for your seating arrangement in your living room or family room, this is one of the few companies that can bring you that. Simply get in touch with us to learn more about how you can have a cocktail table or another piece made to match with the rest of your interior design.
Custom Wood and Metal Finishes
Just like you can go awry decorating your home with furniture that is not well suited to the overarching theme or to each other, you can run into aesthetic issues arising from the wood or metal finish used with a given piece of furniture; even little features like the type of hardware used in upholstery can cause a clash of elements in design. These things are best avoided or prevented.
Luckily, with Thayer Coggin, you can customize the furniture you intend to work into your home right down to the fine details of the exposed wood and metal used in the construction. If a black powder coat is too severe or brutal for a setting, go with something offering a bit more levity, perhaps brushed stainless steel or brushed brass. Similarly, the wood finishes can be customized. Whether your home would benefit most from the dark, stately character of unfinished walnut or the brilliant, light tones of natural maple is up to you. What matters is that you can customize the finished look with their designs.
Finish with Custom Fabric and Leather
While the exposed metalworks and wood frame of a piece of furniture will have a marked effect on the setting, it’s more often the case that the direct influence of the leather, fabric, or upholstery of seating will have a more pronounced impact. Think of the hardware and wood finishes as accent marks; the leather or upholstery is the statement itself.
Just as Thayer Coggin gives you the ability to customize the look of your furniture with the exposed wood and metalworks, you can entirely personalize the design with hand-selected fabrics and leathers. This gives you complete control of the appearance and overall “feel” of a finished piece of furniture.
While comfort is built right into every design, a custom look is not. That’s the final piece of the puzzle with their furniture. With everything from coarsely woven natural fabrics to textured leathers and even hair-on hides, in colors ranging from neutrals to vibrant primaries, they leave nothing to chance. When you furnish your home you have to do it right the first time, and they take extra pains to make it possible.

]]>So, in this hypothetical scenario, you are redecorating your home. Redecoration may come with a lot of trials and tribulations. After all, you will be spending quite a bit of money giving your home a new look. This isn’t to say that it’s not worth it, though! A home redecoration means revamping your living space and allowing you and your family to find a new way to love your home.
By redecorating or even renovating your space, it allows you to refresh your home and fall in love with it all over again. Redecorating might be a good option when you think it’s time to replace anything in your home like appliances or furniture. Although your home’s furniture is thought to last many years, normal wear and tear could shorten that lifespan.
Additionally, taste and style preferences change, so what you once thought was stylish or practical enough for your home might not be the case anymore. No worries, because there are plenty of home decoration stores or websites to broaden your horizons with.
No matter the style, size, or inner workings of your home, our store, Ohio Hardwood & Upholstered Furniture is sure to please any homeowner. Our storefront and showroom are located in Peninsula, Ohio, just a short drive from Cleveland. However, we do have our online store that is fully equipped with many styles, designers, and brands of furniture of your choosing.
We understand the importance of good quality furniture over everything else when redecorating or refurnishing your home. New furniture should be built to last and be susceptible to the wear and tear of everyday life. This mindset makes us the premiere Ohio furniture store.
Our Dedication to Excellence
From our humble beginnings, we have been dedicated to providing the best furniture pieces. Our founder and the first owner opened this shop as a lumber mill until 2008 when Ohio Hardwood Furniture was opened.
We like to stand out from the crowd by producing unique and high-quality hardwood furniture pieces. Unlike our conventional, retail counterparts, we fully embrace the craftsmanship that comes with each piece of furniture we sell on our online store and showcase in our storefront.
Our custom design solutions allow our customers to break away from traditional or cookie-cutter furniture styles that are widely available in other stores. Being able to choose from your own wood, stain, and size of each piece of furniture gives our customers the necessary involvement in furniture that will now be used in their homes for years to come.
No matter if you decide to purchase furniture from one of our selected brands or want to start at the bare bones for your newest furniture collection, the team at Ohio Hardwood will be with your every step of the way.
We Know the Importance of Sustainability
Especially during these times, sustainability should be at the forefront of everyone’s mind. Being one of the leading Ohio furniture stores, we fully understand the need for sustainable practices, so that is why we make our furniture in the way that we do.
Being that most of our furniture is made internally, we locally source all of our lumber that is sustainably sourced in regions of the Mid-West. Due to the impacts of deforestation, we work with excellently trained foresters that know exactly when a tree should be cut. There is no need to clear wide areas of trees that destroy the ecosystem of that forest just for the sake of our furniture.
To eliminate any waste wood, we try to use every single part of the tree. Any extra wood from our sawmill is used as a heat source for our homes. For our landscape mulch, we use extra wood edgings. Nothing goes to waste here at Ohio Hardwood.
We Supply The Best Brands
Picking out premade furniture that may best fit your needs is the traditional way to go. Not everyone can design custom furniture for their home, it can be hard to imagine how a custom piece can actually fit your home. So, we do stock our online store with brands and furniture designers that we trust.
All of our designer brands are ready to ship, so there’s no extra wait time when it comes to purchasing new furniture. Choose from brands like CR Laine, Hallagan, Leathercraft, Our House, and more! Our team believes in variety, so that’s what we continue to provide our customers.
Here at Ohio Hardwood Furniture, we hope to be the furniture store you can turn to when thinking of redecorating or refurnishing your home. From our hand-made custom furniture to our ready-to-ship furniture brands, we want to see your living spaces flourish with beautiful, high-quality furniture.

]]>Copeland Furniture began in 1976 in a garage in East Corinth, Vermont, making a variety of wood products (not just wood furniture) from native hardwoods. The Appalachian mountains in New England are well known for their prized hardwoods, including some species that are not commonly encountered elsewhere.
Originally, Copeland began making cider presses for local families, in keeping with the New England tradition of honest work and specifically with Vermont’s tradition of honoring its agrarian heritage.
Though it was originally founded by a single person and operated out of a home, Copeland’s quality craftsmanship and unique designs grew it steadily into the icon it remains today.
Copeland is true to its roots and to its original vision. Though they are no longer based in East Corinth, they never left Vermont. As Copeland grew, it eventually outpaced its resources and needed a new space. Today, Copeland is centered in Bradford, Vermont, along the Connecticut River. They now own and operate a first-class facility, and keep to their original guiding principles.
To answer the question fully, we would like to reiterate that Copeland is not only still headquartered stateside, in Vermont, but that all of its operations are conducted domestically as well.
Today, Copeland not only remains in Vermont where they started; they are the largest employer in their town of Bradford, Vermont. Their designs are still produced from the highest-quality local, native hardwoods, but they are still entirely made by skilled artisans here in the United States.
Additionally, Copeland remains a family owned and operated company, just as it was nearly fifty years ago when they started. The values of integrity, hard work, and quality production still run through everything they do, which is one of the reasons Copeland is such a respected name in the industry for top-tier, handmade, hardwood furniture.
Yes, Copeland does make use of hardwood stock, including examples of woods that are found in their area of Vermont, to this day. They use nothing but the highest quality premium hardwoods that they can source and use only components that are functionally and aesthetically superior.
As for proven construction techniques, much like us here at Ohio Hardwood Furniture, Copeland uses only proven techniques and methods in the construction of their hardwood furniture. This results in designs that are not only beautiful but also able to last for many years with the right care and maintenance.
That is an excellent question but unfortunately, it is very difficult to answer it succinctly. Copeland’s furniture has been called minimalistic, Scandinavian, and it has even been said to draw its influence from some “Artsy” designs. Some merchants selling Copeland pieces have also called them mid-century modern in their appeal. One might argue that their simple design aesthetic is a leave over from America’s early agricultural colonial days when design to a backseat to function and a unique type of appeal emerged as a result.
Copeland doesn’t neatly fit into any echelon of design and certainly possesses traits that make it very unique and individualistic. If you can see a minimalist trend in their designs, you can probably also see what might even have an edge of “art nouveau” to it.
It’s best to take it at face value instead of trying to dissect and categorize it. Besides, much of the beauty of Copeland’s designs come from the raw materials from which they are produced.
Even though it isn’t easy to say just exactly what is most typical of Copeland’s designs, that doesn’t mean that you can make artful use of them in your home and your other living spaces, such as offices and common areas.
Because Copeland designs do seem to have a pronounced slant in the direction of “minimalism” that makes them more compatible with a larger number of other aesthetics than anything else. Would an ornately graven, baroque, French Country-Esque dining table do well in the presence of a set of chairs from Copeland? Not overtly, but it could be argued that the incongruousness of the designs offered some sort of modern harmony. Kind of like if you take two anachronistic themes and place them next to each other. Sometimes there is something pleasant about it.
In other words, there are more designs that Copeland will do well alongside than those with which they are incompatible. That is if there are any trends with which Copeland really is incompatible, to begin with.
That is a question that is much easier to answer than the one listed above. Copeland specifically makes furniture for a number of rooms in your house. To get a real appreciation for their specialties and an overall feel for the spirit of their design, we ask you to look at our collection of ready-to-ship Copeland Furniture floor items so you can see what they’re all about.
However, to give you a synopsis, there are several designs for which Copeland is particularly renowned. Among them are the beds, dressers, and nightstands they produce for the bedroom, along with the dining room tables and sets they produce for dining areas and common areas.
In addition, Copeland is well known and beloved for its drawer chests, coffee tables, and many other designs.
You’ll notice that in the space above we specifically directed you to our collection of ready-to-ship Copeland floor items. That’s where you can get familiar with some of the Copeland items that we actually keep on hand and have in stock at the moment. These vary from time to time.
Copeland’s bread and butter, however, is not in a push strategy. They don’t just produce hoping that envious customers will buy; their repute has gone far beyond that. The center of Copeland’s operation lies in customer orders, specially requested by its customers and then made-to-order.
Check out our location for Copeland made-to-order items where you can see what kinds of designs they are known for and what you can have them produce for your home. As you will see when you investigate the collection, you’re closer than ever to a fresh new look for your bedroom, dining room, or elsewhere in your home - where the beauty of the medium, natural hardwood, takes center stage.
Custom made furnishings wouldn’t be much good if you couldn’t have your pick of the medium, would they be? They wouldn’t be very custom at all, come to think of it.
So, in short, yes, you can choose between your pick of hardwood construction media for most of Copeland’s designs, which you can see enumerated on any of the product pages. Check out the collection of built-to-order items that we offer from Copeland and select your favorite. It will say right in the listing what wood the item is made from, although you can change the stain - see below for more details.
Many of Copeland’s most popular designs are made from cherry or maple, but if you would like to learn more about what else they can offer, get in touch with us and we would be more than happy to go over any other opportunities that exist, and where.
Check out the page above and make sure you contact us if you have any questions regarding what woods you can have your favorite piece made from.
Good news for anyone shopping through our Copeland collection who wants to see their favorite nightstand or chest of drawers, but with a slightly different character. Even if it is only offered in cherry wood construction, you might be able to get the look you want anyway.
Let’s say you click on a given nightstand that can only be produced in cherry wood; if you love the look of the dresser but the light color of cherry is just too bright for your setting, just pick a configuration and then move onto stain options; you can see them right on the product page.
Copeland often gives you the ability to choose whatever stain you want to pair with a custom made offer, including but not limited to natural cherry, smoke cherry, and cognac cherry. Those who are looking for a more rustic look might appreciate the stain color of saddle cherry, pictured below in the sample image, whereas others might be more interested in the dark tones of smoke cherry.
Since you asked, you’ll be happy to know that there are options for discounts and savings with special pricing, but not on custom made items. We keep a collection of floor items on hand that for one reason or another are granted redacted pricing, but it’s impossible for us to predict what we will have in our collection at any given time.
Rather, the best way to get a deal is to keep yourself from being a stranger. Stop by our collection of reduced furniture from time to time and make sure you keep your eyes open for designs for your home - you never know if you’ll find something from Copeland in the collection.
Even if you don’t see your preferred Copeland item, we often have floor items from Hallagan, Carolina Custom Leather, CR Laine, and many others represented in our collection of reduced items. It’s the best way on our site to get a really good deal on great furniture - maybe even the deal of a lifetime.
Of course, you can see how others are using Copeland furniture to get inspired and to come up with ideas from your own home - but it might take a little bit of digging. Visit our partner, Copeland’s website, or better yet, follow us on Instagram where you can see some high-quality photos showing off some of our nicest items.
Follow us and you’ll be the first to know what’s coming, what’s new, and to get inspiration for how to decorate with furniture - including Copeland but in no way limited to it!
In fact, follow us on social media and you’ll be ahead of the game, whether you’re waiting for new items to hit the market or just like to get ideas from photography and arrangements.
We’re so glad you asked! We offer much more than just Copeland, Wesley Hall, Hubbardton Forge, Thayer Coggin, and McKinley Leather Furniture here on our website. We also offer our own collection of unique designs, made from locally sourced, sustainably harvested hardwoods and produced using only proven methods and techniques.
Much like Copeland, here at Ohio Hardwood Furniture, we place a great emphasis on community, heritage, and quality. That’s why we produce furniture only from native hardwoods that have been sustainably sourced. Whereas some producers might harvest trees within three years, we often take much longer - it’s not uncommon for us to allow trees to mature for 10 years before harvesting. This preserves the ecology of a system and also provides higher quality lumber.
In addition, we take steps to ensure that we minimize waste in our processes. For example, we burn scraps, odds, and ends of wood as fuel. We also reuse wood chips as mulch and sawdust as animal bedding.
We do all of that while producing some of the finest benchmade furniture that is still handmade right here in America. In that respect, we’re not so different from Copeland.
To learn more about our environmentally-friendly processes or about the styles of furniture, including modern furniture, we create, take a leisurely ramble through our website. If you can, visit us in our store in Peninsula, Ohio. We love to see our customers in the store, and that’s the best way to get a feel for our designs. ]]>Have you ever been looking at a beautifully brindled piece of furniture made of wood, or even at a wooden instrument such as a guitar or a muzzleloading firearm with a wood stock, and stood in awe and reverie at the visual allure of the wood’s beauty? Have you ever seen such a fixture in wood, one that had a very odd, almost brindled nature, and wondered to yourself just what on Earth it was that made the wood look like that, what type of wood it was, and where you could get it for yourself?
Enthusiasts of any of the above categories will recognize from the description - or from the picture at the top of this article, that the “wood” in question is known as tiger maple, from which tiger maple furniture is made. However, as you might also have gleaned from the rest of the first paragraph, tiger maple has been used to great effect in many other areas of construction and decoration as well.
It also isn’t known solely as tiger maple. In fact, depending on how you use it and where you’re from, you may have also heard tiger maple called curly maple, ripple maple, flame maple, and occasionally even as bird’s eye maple, although sometimes bird’s eye is a term reserved for a different character of wood grain.
What these names all have in common is that they refer to the same basic aberration of the grain of maple wood that gives them this particular character that looks something like streaks of flame or of a tiger’s stripes. That’s the reason for the name. This pattern of wood can immediately be recognized by it’s “brindle” like appearance and alternating stripes of dark and light grain.
It was commonly used in the early periods of American history in the construction of tools, furniture, and firearms, and for these reasons, some consider it a hallmark of American design and Americana. That, coupled with its uncommon beauty and striking nature makes it very popular among designers and collectors.
Tiger maple is not common, even among maple wood. It forms as the result of uncommon and inconsistent stressors to the wood fibers as the tree grows. When the fibers twist and compress upon themselves, they occasionally produce the distorted grain pattern that is recognizable in tiger maple furniture.
Lucky for woodworkers and other people who covet this particular patterning of grain, tiger maple wood is easy to work with many machine and hand tools and responds well to both gluing and finishing. In fact, depending upon the finish, the wood may appear even more vibrant and beautiful.
If you’ve ever handled a piece of tiger maple or investigated it closely, you may be familiar with the fact that depending upon how it is finished and how the light strikes it and interacts with it, it may appear to glow or present three-dimensional qualities in the grain. While this feature is not exclusive to tiger maple, it is known as chatoyance and it is a highly coveted quality in wood.
Something interesting about tiger maple furniture - and tiger maple in general - is the fact that the pattern of stripes or flames, as they were, runs parallel to the grain of the wood. That is to say, if you look closely along the grain of the wood, the stripe pattern will lay at intervals across your line of sight. It is important to note this because otherwise, it might appear that the method of construction of some tiger maple would have weakened the structure, but this would not be the case given the orientation of the grain.
Beautiful and exquisite, tiger maple furniture is some of the might highly sought after in the world, and luckily, a lot of it is produced right here in the United States. If you’re looking for a homegrown, grassroots look, tiger maple may well be it. Take a look through our collection of furniture that is ready to ship, including highlights from Hubbardton Forge, Copeland Furniture, Treharn Furniture, and many others, and you may find a gem waiting for you.

Our Own Line of Furniture
While we like to offer our customers a little bit of convenience through our floor models of furniture, our specialty really shows itself in the unique pieces of furniture we actually make ourselves.
Take a look through our collection and you’ll learn a bit more about the furniture that we craft by hand here in the United States that we sell right here in our shop; you can learn a bit more below.
100% Benchmade Right Here in the United States
Like all of the furniture we offer here at Ohio Hardwood Furniture, quality matters to us more than almost anything else. When it comes down to quality, there isn’t just one way to define it but certainly one of the most important things we can offer in all of our designs is the guarantee that they are all created, entirely by hand, in our shops, by skilled artisans. Each and every one of our items of furniture is entirely benchmade right here in the United States.
In fact, it goes a bit farther than being benchmade. We mill our own hardwoods, and then cut and saw them into shape. Even after that, all of our hardwood furniture is cut, joined, sanded, and finished by hand in our shops, right here in America.
By ensuring this, we can keep the tightest measure of control over quality and over our care for our workers. It’s just one of the many ways we give back to our community while at the same time keeping quality under the strictest of controls.
Crafted Using Domestic Stocks of Hardwood
Another way we control quality and sustainability is in the practice of using only select, locally sourced hardwoods that are grown domestically and harvested sustainably. For one thing, we only use species that are grown locally so we know just when and how they were harvested, what condition the trees themselves and the environment were in, as well as the relative health of the trees and the wood.
In addition, our practice of sustainable harvesting goes a lot further than this; read on to learn more.
Committed to Sustainability
Let’s just start with a simple fact - it can take a White Oak 20 years to reach sexual maturity, and many more years to reach full maturity. Many White Oaks, depending on growing conditions, will not produce mast until after age 50 or even older. Some loggers harvest their stock after only 3 years or so, which is the blink of an eye in the life of a tree like this.
We’re committed to rotating our harvest through 10 years or so, giving trees, and ecosystems, more time to recover from harvesting and account for the balance. Still, it requires fastidious planting and management practices, but it's better than the standard practice. In that way, we ensure the health not only of the stock but also of the environment in which these trees are grown. Remember, it’s not just trees that live in the woods, despite the fact that they’re called “woods.”
In addition, we use every part of the trees we harvest and produce almost no waste. When we have odds and ends that cannot be repurposed for the purpose of actually creating furniture, we burn them as fuel to heat our shops and homes. We use swarf as mulch and sawdust as animal bedding, ensuring that as little as possible goes to waste. In short, if there’s a sustainable or circular practice we can implement, we implement it.
Endless Options for Customizability
In addition to these values we pass along to our customers, we also give them nearly endless options for customization. Check out almost any one of our own product pages to see just what we offer and how many options we offer for it. Not only do we give our customers the choice of the wood they would like to see a given piece of furniture constructed from, but we also give them options for stain and finish.
For example, you can choose to have a set of tables and chairs crafted from quartersawn White Oak or Cherry wood and then finished with a light or a dark stain, to match the room in your home. No two homes are the same, and furniture is one of the greatest impacts on the spirit of a place. Furniture matters, we give you the power to decorate accordingly.

]]>Quality is what matters in the furniture that you will use to decorate your home, but there is more than one way to define it. For example, quality in outdoor poly furniture might be defined in part by resistance to ultraviolet light, but that is not something you would consider - hardly - in your pursuit of unique designs in indoor furniture.
There are a few things it will all come down to in indoor furniture. Among them are the techniques used in construction, how the upholstery has been handled (if applicable) the visual appeal of a given arrangement as well as whether or not it can be customized to a given setting. If the furniture in question is seating, then you can also account for comfort during your evaluation.
We would be remiss as a furniture maker if we didn’t give a fellow furniture maker like McKinley Leather Furniture the respect they deserve. Among makers of fine, handmade, customizable furniture, they stand as tall atop the list as any other, and they offer their customers a huge amount of quality in their designs. In this article, we’re going to give a quick impression of what it is about McKinley Furniture that sets them apart from the rest. At the end of it, we’re sure you won’t be disappointed a bit if you end up going with one of their seating arrangements for your home. As you’ll see, they’re suitable for basically any room in the house.
A Short History of McKinley Leather
McKinley Leather Furniture is actually one of the younger furniture makers in our catalog. Whereas others boast of 50 years or more of crafting fine designs in hardwood and iron furniture and upholstery, McKinley is just a bit younger. Since 1989, McKinley has been producing and handcrafting fine furniture for homes around the country, all from High Point, North Carolina.
Interestingly enough, North Carolina is like a Mecca for furniture crafters, so it’s not a big surprise that they settled their operation there. In fact, many of our other large furniture partners are also based in North Carolina, like Thayer Coggin, Wesley Hall, Charleston Forge, Hubbardton Forge, and others. It’s fitting to see a maker like McKinley based there, even though their history is slightly shorter.
However, what McKinley lacks in longevity it makes up for in quality and experience. Founded in 1989 by Lori Sadowski along with her father and sister, they rolled many collective years of working leather and wood into one visionary collective that later became known as McKinley Leather Furniture.
Over the years, they have grown from a small operation into the business that they are today - still family-run - but with national repute. McKinley stands atop the bar by which all other upholstered furniture is measured, not only for comfort and durability but also for aesthetic design. Here’s a little bit about how they do what they do.
Grades of Leather
Leather is an amazing material. It is remarkable not only for its strength and longevity but also for its ability to present so many natural facades. The folks at McKinley themselves say that leather is “the world’s oldest and best natural material.”
We won’t officially weigh in on that claim, but there’s no way to deny that leather has been used for thousands of years for its strength, adaptability, durability, and longevity. When the craftsmen at McKinley furniture set out to upholster a piece of furniture, they use only the highest quality materials possible.
They also make a point of drawing fine distinctions between the different grades of leather as well as how the leather has been treated during the process of creating the piece of furniture in question.
They also make it a point to draw out the distinction between cowhides and other forms of leather, as when a product is labeled as “all leather” or “genuine leather,” no distinction is made between what types of leathers have been used or mixed. For example, genuine leather is an inferior grade of leather made from bonded leathers and will not age well; in fact, it will eventually delaminate.
Other leathers, like pigskin and lambskin, while they can be treated to remain soft and supple, will not have the same feel or respond as well to treatments as cowhide leather. You will see the grade of leather that McKinley uses in any piece of furniture prominently disclosed, as well as how it has been treated.
Why It Matters
This matters for many reasons. Among them is the fact that the grade of leather will be one of the determining factors for the overall quality of any given piece of furniture. Another is the fact that how the leather was treated (or what grade was used in the making) will impact how the leather will accept a dye, in accordance with the wishes of the customer.
Yet the quality of the leathers that they use with their furniture is only a small part of the bigger picture of the quality that you can expect from McKinley Furniture. All of their furniture is made from start to finish, by hand, by skilled craftsmen in their shop in High Point, North Carolina.
They start out with the construction of a reinforced hardwood frame for their furniture and attach a traditional spring system that is tied 8-ways for structure and support. Only their frames are constructed can they begin the process of upholstery that has made them so famous. They chiefly use top-grain cowhide leather that has been treated or dyed in accordance with the wishes of the customer.
That’s another thing that has set McKinley apart. Their seating arrangements are made to the highest standards of quality and comfort. Still, they are noteworthy for the breadth of the ability they offer their customers to customize their furniture.
What You Can Customize
McKinley enables their customers to create their own personalized visions through their furniture, customizing just about any and every aspect of the finish. When you customize each and every one of these aspects of their furniture, you can really come up with unique designs for your entire house. Ranging across everything from sofas and sectionals to your family room to barstools and office chairs for the library, there’s something for every room in the house, and every taste - and, if there isn’t you can create it yourself through customization!
McKinley Leather Furniture offers no fewer than six options for cushions, ranging from the comfort of Poly Fiber cushioning to the luxurious resiliency and soft feel of their Royal Down. For those that appreciate a firmer feel in their seating, they offer firmer versions of the Poly Fiber cushioning as well as much more in between. There’s something for every preference in their catalog.
They also provide a number of different finishes in their leather upholstery as well as several hair-on-hide options, including Axis deer hide.
For these customers, McKinley has provided a wealth of different fabrics that can be used in place of their leathers to upholster their seating arrangements. They offer many classic patterns and fabrics that can be mated to their furniture, all of which are of the highest quality and can be viewed on their website.
You might not point to the hardware, like the tacks or the nailheads, as the first thing that sets off the impression of a piece of fine furniture, but it can make the difference between good and great. Among the many finishes that McKinley Furniture offers are Nickel, Pewter, and Old Gold, as well as others. In addition, they also give their customers the choice of how the nailheads are arranged on the upholstery, which can change the entire impression of a sofa or chair.
McKinley offers wood finishes ranging from the lightness of sandstone to the deep, black tones of black walnut, but they also provide many other unique finishes. As for the legs and casters, you can customize the actual wooden legs of the furniture themselves, or, if the piece requires casters, the casters. Whether you’re going with a modern, simplified look or the Baroque impression of an ornately graven set of legs for your couch, McKinley Furniture makes it possible.

Not only do we create one of a kind designs to make your indoor spaces all that they can be, but we reuse all of our waste to minimize our impact on the environment.
Yet your interior design is only half of the picture. If you really want to complete your home, you can’t neglect the design and layout of your outdoor spaces, especially if outdoor living and entertainment are in your future.
Don’t Forget Outdoor Living!
If you are in the practice of entertaining company in your outdoor spaces, then don’t leave any potential behind. There are so many ways that you can make your outdoor living experience better, and so many people choose instead to buy cheap, flimsy furniture that gets through one season on a wing and a prayer.
The expression “in for a dime, in for a dollar,” comes from situations like this. If you set your outdoor spaces up with cheap dime-a-dozen outdoor furniture, then in some ways you are definitely getting just what you pay for. They fade, warp, crack and fall apart after a season or two of use, and they don’t provide much use at that. Don’t even get us started on what they offer in terms of aesthetic value. We can answer that in a word: nothing.
That’s one of the reasons we decided to expand our inventory to include a high-quality selection in furniture for outdoor living. For years we’ve been producing and selling only furniture of the highest quality for your indoor spaces, but the backyard is a part of the home and therefore deserves the same attention you afford your interior. As we’ve mentioned many times before, the way you decorate your spaces is a reflection on the welcoming spirit of your home, and now, with some of the designs we have in our collection, like Berlin Gardens outdoor furniture, you can complete your look.
What They Do
Berlin Gardens furniture specializes in producing extremely durable, extremely high-quality pieces of furniture for your outdoor spaces. They kill several birds with one stone. In the first place, they use only the toughest and most durable materials, but they take it a step further.
The look, feel, and overall aesthetic of Berlin Gardens outdoor furniture simply can’t be compared to anything else that you’ll find out there. The poly lumber construction of their furniture can hardly be equaled by any other synthetic materials, and in fact, it comes able to afford you a number of benefits that we will detail a little further on in this article.
In other words, you can stop reading now and take a look at some of the Berlin Gardens poly furniture that we offer here and get to decorating your backyard over again with some of the best designs in the industry. Otherwise, read on and we’ll take a much closer look at what makes their poly outdoor furniture not only unique but beneficial.
A Wealth of Styles
Berlin Gardens outdoor furniture is not only noteworthy for the high quality of its construction, but also for the fact that they produce a wealth of styles for the benefit of your design. That is, whatever type of furniture or appeal you’re going for in your exterior design, there is probably something in our collection of outdoor furniture to help you accomplish that vision.
Whether you’re looking for a classic Adirondack chair, a patio swing, or a seating arrangement with durable outdoor cushions, you can find it from Berlin Gardens. In fact, they also offer a number of other supporting pieces of furniture like footstools, storage boxes, and tables to complete the look.
The other thing to keep in mind when shopping through a collection of Berlin Gardens furniture is that you can accessorize in so many different ways through the color alone. Berlin Gardens furniture comes in a ton of different poly colors and finishes. You can accent your outdoor space with bright red poly furniture, a natural wood finish, or even something exotic like a hammered bronze or stainless steel finish.
Why Poly
Another thing that differentiates a company like Berlin Gardens from other producers is the fact that they make their furniture almost entirely from poly lumber. Not only is this not your run of the mill poly material, but there are a few reasons that this type of furniture might be superior to alternatives in the outdoors.
Normally, we would make a case against synthetic materials like this, but given where the furniture is used and how it is made, there are a few benefits to this type of material.
Never Fades
The first benefit that we’re going to address here is the fact that their poly lumber never fades, and it hardly needs any maintenance whatsoever, but we’ll address that in a moment. Because it never fades, regardless of the color or finish you get it in, it will be looking as fresh and new several years from now as it did on the day that you bought it, and all after sitting out in the elements unprotected.
Their poly furniture is made from High-Density Polyethylene, which is also called HDPE. This is a recycled plastic that is extremely tolerant in the face of the elements. In this particular instance, we will draw some attention to the fact that it will not fade.
Changes in temperature, the onslaught of ice, snow, and rain, changes in humidity, and exposure to pests will cause natural wood and many other materials to break down and fade over time. However, one of the most destructive agents of the elements is ultraviolet light. Ultraviolet light not only breaks down natural and synthetic materials, but it causes them to fade over time.
Berlin Gardens furniture is treated with an additional layer of protection against UV light. That means that in addition to being resistant to weather, temperature, moisture, pests, most corrosive agents, and more, it is also resistant to UV light. The bottom line? Your Berlin Gardens furniture will require almost no maintenance and will be just as bright years from now as it is today in the catalog.
One more thing to note - this type of furniture never needs to be painted. The colors that are used to make it penetrate throughout the plastic from which it is produced, which means that it will never need to be touched up.
Forget Insect Resistance - Insect-Proof!
Wood isn’t just prone to the onslaughts of the environment such as UV light and changes in temperature. One of the most insidious forces of nature that takes its toll on natural materials is the host of pests that the outdoors will subject them to. Insects, in particular, wreak havoc on exposed wood, even wood that has been treated.
Some larvae eat the wood, whereas others simply make their homes in it. Either way, wood can become a haven for pests and they break it down over time. Guess what insects don’t eat. They don’t eat poly lumber, which means that your Berlin Gardens outdoor furniture will never break down due to the influence of pests. That means you will never need to treat it to resist them or deal with their effects. In fact, you can stop worrying about them altogether.
Effectively Waterproof
Another thing to love about high-quality poly furniture for the outdoors is that it is not only waterproof, but it also will not interact with water at all. In fact, HDPE is a naturally hydrophobic material. There are a couple of things that are worth noting about this.
Wood furniture that is used outdoors has to be meticulously treated and sealed to help extend its longevity. Even with the most intensive and attentive treatments, outdoor wooden furniture that is exposed to the elements will not last forever.
Wood rots when it is exposed to water. Wood also absorbs moisture and will warp, cups, bows, bends, and otherwise distorts itself. The warping is not only unsightly, but it weakens the joinery used in the making of the furniture and effectively “pulls it apart” over time.
High-density polyethylene, on the other hand, is naturally hydrophobic. Therefore it will not only never rot, it will also never absorb any moisture and warp as a result. Additionally, HDPE furniture will never crack or splinter the way natural wood will.
Resistant to Changes in Temperature
Temperature is also another thing that can place a huge strain on natural wood products, and unfortunately, there is no way to treat it. Much like when wood absorbs water and warps, changes in temperature will cause wood to grow and shrink, which will also put pressure on its joints.
HDPE will also grow and shrink in response to changes in temperature, but not to the same degree as well. Also, since it is impervious to moisture, the changes in temperature will not affect the rate at which it absorbs moisture because it doesn’t.
Once again, this just means that HDPE is naturally well suited to life in the outdoors, and can make your life a little bit easier as a homeowner who needs furniture for outdoor living.
Almost No Maintenance
Although Berlin Gardens recommends you clean your furniture with soap and water from time to time, just to keep it clean, the material from which it is made will not promote the growth of bacteria or fungi. At the same time, it is, as we have already mentioned, fade-resistant, resistant to insects, and nearly impervious to the weather.
That means that while you can wash them down periodically, they are basically worry-free. Even the hardware with which they are put together is of the highest quality and is naturally resistant to corrosion and wear.
Great for The Environment
We’ve made a pretty strong case for the value of Berlin Gardens furniture at this point, but we can make it even stronger. Keep in mind that this type of poly lumber is great for the environment, too, and that’s something we care deeply about here at Ohio Hardwood Furniture.
Now, admittedly, not all synthetics are good for the environment. In fact, some of them are downright bad for it. However, this type of poly lumber is actually made from recycled materials, so it is taking pollutants out of circulation rather than adding to them. Also, since it lasts forever, it doesn’t need to be ‘thrown out’ where it will just contribute to pollution once more.
There’s another effect here. While we are very responsible for the lumber we source for our own hardwood furniture, not all producers are. Berlin Gardens producers poly furniture, which means they are not harvesting hardwoods at all. It helps the earth in much more than one way.

]]>Milo Baughman is a name you might not know unless you have an education in modern interior design or even a strong handle on some of the more influential names in furniture. Among the tops names in furniture today, you will come across names like Wesley Hall, Hubbardton Forge, Leathercraft, and Thayer Coggin. This last one owes its success to the vision and genius of the man himself.
Born in 1923 in Kansas, Milo Baughman quickly determined his penchant for his astute tastes and his ability to craft insightful, modern, yet simplistic interior designs. When he was young, he came by the task of designing both the interior and exterior of his family’s new home in Long Beach, California. During his service in the United States Armed Forces in World War II, he was instrumental in designing interior spaces for the Army.
It didn’t take too much convincing to show him that his path in life would follow interior design, and while some of you reading this might recognize his name from familiarity with iconic furniture manufacturer Thayer Coggin, he actually lent his influence to many modern furniture designers, including but not limited to Pacific Iron, Glenn of California, Winchendon and many others.
It was Thayer Coggin, however, that he founded in 1953 in High Point, North Carolina, that has more than anything else cemented his name in the annals of the history of furniture and of interior design. Milo Baughman designs are most often linked to an interest in Thayer Coggin, and in those pieces of furniture, his influence can still be felt.
Throughout his life, he was famous for creating a special kind of mid-century modern design that was attractive, yet somewhat simplified and most importantly, affordable and therefore accessible to the masses. These influences live on in some of the iconic pieces of Thayer Coggin furniture that you can see here in our shop online.
Thayer Coggin’s furniture is a throwback to some of the most popular designs that Milo Baughman ever produced, and in fact, even today they still make a line called the “Milo Caughman Collection,” which contains samples of some of his finest visions in mid-century modern design. In such a collection you will find lounge chairs, dining chairs, recliners, sectionals, sofas, and other seating that are unmistakably the product of the man himself.
Yet even outside of this exclusive collection, there are many exemplary designs in our catalog of Thayer Coggin Furniture that are unmistakably linked to his influence. Only take a look at that link and you will see seating that seems to bear his name in their elements. With a merging of soft and full seating with a frame and structure that is minimalistic and intriguing, there’s no mistaking that you’re looking at a genuine Thayer Coggin.
Milo Baughman took influence from the merging of these elements, creating furniture that had an interesting element of negative space, yet was uniquely comfortable and filling within the space of a home. This can be seen in much of his seating arrangements and is a thing best observed through a pictorial representation and not through words. Nonetheless, his furniture is a match made in heaven for homes that have modern, minimalist, art deco, and art nouveau designs, as well, of course, as a good design in mid-century modern. There are very few schools of design with which furniture like this can be said to be incompatible, and there are many more ways you can go with it than that you can’t.
Adding value into the visual allure of Thayer Coggin furniture is the fact that each and every single piece of Thayer Coggin furniture is designed right here in the United States and then completely benchmade at their factory in North Carolina. In fact, not only is every piece of their furniture entirely handmade by skilled craftsmen; each upholstered piece is individually customized based on the wishes of the customer. They select from hundreds of the finest fabrics and leathers or upholstery and commit themselves to the pursuit of quality of all aspects of their business.
If you want to learn more about how you can place an order for a special piece of Thayer Coggin for your home, and what your options are, get in touch with a member of our team today. You can give us a call at 330-657-2095 and we would be more than glad to walk you through the process.
In addition, you could always stop by our showroom in Peninsula, Ohio, where you can get more familiar with furniture like this as well as the many other wonderful designs we offer in our showroom. Bringing an esteemed piece of Thayer Coggin furniture into your home is only one way to compliment your architectural design, and will serve as an undying testament to the influence of the great Milo Baughman.
]]>We here at Ohio Hardwood Furniture recognize that quality is more than just a name. There is quality wrapped up in the brands that we sell here on our website and in our showroom in Ohio, true enough. Names like Leathercraft, Wesley Hall, Thayer Coggin, and Charleston Forge own mystique in their very name that cannot be easily dispelled.
Yet it is not the name alone that connotes quality, but rather the sum of the processes and mission of an organization. Take Wesley Hall, for example. Wesley hall has defined quality in its seating arrangements to the point that the very name “Wesley Hall” connotes comfort.
But the quality of Wesley Hall begins long in advance of you bringing home one of their sofas and adding it to your home. It begins with the high-quality hardwood stock they select for the construction of their furniture as well as the select upholstery they use. It continues with their careful handcrafting traditions and culminates in the fact that every single piece of Wesley Hall furniture is an entirely bench-made beauty.
As you can see, there is quality in a process, and there can be quality in a material as well as in a name. For example, in our own line of hardwood furniture, we use only hardwood stock that has been selectively sustainably harvested. Like Wesley Hall, we are proud to report that we create entirely bench-made furniture as well and minimize waste in every area that we can.
Quality can also be defined by the material as combined with processes. For example, you may have become interested in some of the buzz that surrounds live edge furniture in recent years and been drawn to the rugged, rustic look of it all. Perhaps you are even wondering if a live edge dining table is right for you. This short introduction to live edge wood will hopefully answer some of the questions you might have before you make any lasting decisions that will impact the design of your home.
What Is Live Edge?
But first, we need to get a little more into what a live edge is before we can make inroads on whether or not it is a good match for your home. The design has taken some interior circles by storm in recent years, and it certainly does switch things up a little, so its popularity should come as no large surprise.
Here’s what it is and how it’s made. Most furniture is made from milled planks or logs that are joined together, and for the most part, live edge furniture has this in common with others. When a log is milled, some parts of the end grain and knots are exposed, but for the most part, a plank constitutes only a small sliver of the whole tree that produced the log.
Therefore, most furniture produced today contains only sections of heartwood and occasionally sapwood that have been milled and finished. This gives the classic look of a piece of furniture made from wood, as seen in the picture below of a Copeland Astrid 6 Drawer Case in Cherry.
As you can see, beautiful though the native grain of the Cherry wood is, it is only a small portion of the tree, as can be represented by a cross-sectional investigation. There is none of the tissue from the cambium or the bark present in this construction. Largely, traditional furniture making and woodworking have discarded these parts of the tree as they are high in moisture and difficult to work with and preserve.
Live edge furniture like a live edge table, for example, is typically made up of a longitudinal slice of a tree that stretches from the bark on one side of the log through the sapwood and heartwood to the bark on the other side. Occasionally, live-edge tables are made with the bark scraped away, although the rough irregularities between the juncture of the sapwood and the outer portions of the tree will remain visible.
Consider the picture of a live-edge dining table that is currently in our online showroom, displayed at the top of this article. Admittedly, this particular table shows a relatively esoteric form of live-edge in which the “live edges” of the wood are turned inward, accented with river rock, and joined by epoxy resin.
More typically, live edge construction has the live edges at the edge of the table instead of turned inward, but as you can see, there is more than one way to go about it. What remains, however, is the fact that the edge of the wood, with all of its imperfections and irregularities, is preserved, sometimes with the bark on. As stated, this often results from a full section of a log being taken from the tree from side to side.
Live edge construction presents a unique and pleasantly jarring experience for the viewer, especially when you may have only seen traditional construction techniques applied. However, there are a lot of ways that live edges can be worked into a number of designs in order to make an appreciable mark for the better.
Why a Live Edge Dining Table?
That brings us to why you might want to create a new look for your home or just a room in your home like the dining room, with a live edge dining table. When there are so many options out there boasting of traditional construction, why go with something as unconventional as live-edge?
There are a number of reasons that you might want to consider a live edge table for your home. For one thing, the design is simply captivating. If for no other reason than the simple fact that it is uncommon enough to capture attention, a live edge table will become a fixture of your home.
Yet this is far from the only reason because the native beauty of a live edge table will resonate from the wood as well as or better than traditional finished pieces. With a live edge piece, you don’t just get luster of the finished heartwood. You get to see the boundary between the heartwood and sapwood and the confluence of the living tissue and the skeleton of the tree. There is a multi-hued harmony in each and every live edge piece that cannot be simulated. This is evident with traditional construction but thrown into sharp relief with live-edge. For an illustration, take a look again at the table at the top of this article. The dark beauty of the walnut heartwood is thrown into sharp contrast with the lighter sapwood and set off by the irresistible irregularities of the edges of the wood. It’s attractive in a way that is difficult to qualify and impossible to quantify.
Yet there is more to live edge than the simple fact that it is a break from the norm. Because it is not so much created as refined from a natural look, it is largely compatible with a number of different styles of interior design. Granted, its rustic simplicity might not make the best match for baroque or colonial-inspired designs, but it would resonate with minimalist and naturalist themes effortlessly. Art deco, modern design, and bucolic themes all find a fine match with live edge furniture.
So live edge construction is versatile and refreshing, but it comes with one more feature that makes it popular in many circles, and that is in the fact that it really showcases its origins. One might almost look at a piece of furniture and forget that it came from a tree, from a living organism, in the first place, but that is hard to forget when you look at a live edge table.
A live edge table almost looks like it was dropped out of the woods, even when it has been beautifully joined and finished. It is something like an homage to the tree that produced it and contains not only the natural beauty of the tree but also the imperfections and irregularities that come along with it. That’s one more reason that people love live edge construction and you might appreciate it too.
Things to Look out for
If you’re still on board with a live edge dining table and are thinking about getting one for your home, then you should keep the following things in mind when you are shopping.
Not all live-edge construction takes the form of one single cut of wood. Sometimes several smaller planks are joined together to create a larger table, for instance, if a tree is too small to create the entire surface of the table on its own. Sometimes, however, it is done to skirt imperfections in the would that would compromise the look or integrity of the table. Just be sure you know what you are looking for, as not all live edge is the same.
In addition, you might want to ensure that live edge construction has been properly and slowly kiln dried. Wood takes an appreciable amount of time to be dried properly to prevent warping and checking and it has been worked, and it’s critical that it has been properly kiln-dried, and slowly, before being made into a table. This is more something to look out for elsewhere, as here at Ohio Hardwood Furniture, all of the furniture we create as well as all of the furniture we source from our suppliers has been laboriously prepared, crafted, and finished using only the most selective of techniques.
There are a few more things you should look out for, although these are not things you’ll need to worry about with Ohio Hardwood Furniture’s stock. There are a few things you should look out for in live edge, specifically, checks and voids that can compromise the quality of the wood.
Checks are small cracks that typically form at the end grain of the wood and are typically associated with improperly drying the wood. Wood that has been dried too quickly or exposed to adverse conditions is like to check; this harms not only the wood's integrity but also its visual aesthetic.
As for voids, these are undesirable spaces or gaps in the wood that can be caused by a number of things, such as an infection in the heartwood of a tree. Sometimes it is a concern, but other times the craftsman producing the table will simply try the wood and fill the void with resin. Again, these are not things to worry about when you shop with us, but they are things you should be aware to look out for if you shop elsewhere.
Visit Us in Store

]]>Take a moment to reflect on what is the first thing that strikes you when you walk into a building. Even more poignantly, take a moment to consider what is the first thing you notice, or feel, when you enter a room since a room is bound to be more intimate than an entryway or a commercial building.
There are any number of things that you might have thought, and your impressions may even have changed if you gave the thought some time to develop. You might have mentioned something like the predominant color scheme of the setting or the paints that were used on the walls. The innate nature of the architecture of the room will also color the spirit of a place.
Then again, you might have thought of things such as the decor or the theme of the decor of the setting. What hangings were present on the walls, what pictures were displayed, and any other types of interior decoration that were present all will have had an effect on your perception of the spirit of a locus. You might even have thought of the impact that the effect of natural lighting could have on a location. The number and size of windows will impact the ‘feel’ of a setting as much as the light they offer, and at what times they offer it.
Anything beyond this is going to get into a very fine layer of detail; and it is certainly true that each of these things will deeply color the emotional presentation of a setting. The color scheme and painting of the walls and ceiling of a room will give it a certain immutable character. The same could be said of the shape and depth of the room, of the lighting, and of the prevailing interior decor.
There is one thing, however, that is missing in this assessment, and we’re sure it’s one that at least a few of you reading this will have thought of by this point. What’s missing from this assessment is the impact that furnishings can have on the feeling of a setting, and it is an undeniable one at that.
Furniture can be set up to give a setting an innate feeling of richness or class. Think of a room that you have seen graced with ornately decorated rococo carvings in wood, with rich, dark furniture that gave a feeling of elegance and splendor. Now consider a room that was sparsely furnished, and with items of furniture that were poorly matched to each other.
There is a definite disconnect between these two settings, and though the emotional effect produced will vary by the individual, it is not something that can be written off. The fact is that furnishings can have a great impact on a setting and the furniture you choose can add to, or detract from, your home.
For that reason, it is important to take a step back and account for the plan of your interior design before you proceed with providing furnishings for your home. In this article we’re going to take a look at one of our most distinguished lines of furniture, being Leathercraft Furniture, as well as what defines their excellence and what they can do for your home.
Rich History
Interestingly enough, once you become familiar with Leathercraft furniture, its elegant, even regal presence will overshadow the import of the company’s rich history. Even so, Leathercraft does have a long, rich history, and one that deserves recognition.
For more than 50 years, Leathercraft has been defining and redefining what it means to wholly create the finest leather upholstered furniture in the entire world. The company has, for the duration of its lifetime, operated from the Western Highlands of North Carolina, which boasts of a colorful heritage of skilled craftsmen and tradesmen.
Their dedication to their craft has enabled them to improve, even perfect practices associated with their craft. From the hardwood frames that make up the skeletons of their furniture to the finish of the leathers they use to complete it and even the metal hardware that serves both as finish and accent, they have committed themselves to their livelihood.
With a half of a century invested in any craft, furniture making, or otherwise, there comes a skill that cannot be imitated. That experience is the driving force behind their underlying quality, and it is that experience that has enabled them to provide the highest quality and levels of customer service for which they are so widely revered.
High Standards
Leathercraft furniture is not only respected for its long and storied tale of success but objectively for the peerless pieces of finished furniture they produce. Each and every one of their sofas, sectionals, chairs, recliners, and ottomans are made to a level of quality that simply cannot be matched by the competition.
The quality stretches far beyond the raw material that they put into its construction (and on which we will take a focus shortly). It goes into the making of the very bones of the piece. Each piece of furniture is carefully manufactured and inspected to be representative of the quality that they can be proud to associate with their name.
Only then do their craftsmen finish the piece with select leather upholstery and metal fittings and call it complete. As far as their vision on quality is concerned, they believe more in the value of the finished piece than in the efficiency that can be realized in creating it. To paraphrase their very own words, they believe it is better to waste a little time and material in order to end up with art than to sacrifice quality in the name of a short term profit. In other words, they recognize that art takes skill, dedication, and time.
Access to Stock from All Over the World
A large part of the high quality that comes along with Leathercraft designs is vested in the selection of premium leathers that they use to decorate and upholster their pieces. Their craftsmen have access to leather from all over the world and use only the highest grades available for their use.
They also make it a point to define what quality it; whereas many upholsterers and leather craftsmen make it a point to ‘erase’ blemishes from their leathercraft, the craftsmanship at Leathercraft believes in the natural beauty of full-grain leather, and in the inestimable quality that accompanies it.
In their view, full-grain leather that bears the marks of the hide; scars, bites, scrapes, and folds, is leather the way leather should be. Meaning it should look like itself and not as a cheap imitation of itself. It’s similar to how a real diamond is treasured for its minute imperfections whereas cubic zirconia is cheapened by their absence.
Distinguished Pieces
This all comes together to endow Leathercraft Furniture with a rich, classical feel that just can’t be found in most of the competition if it can be found at all. It would be quite enough if Leathercraft made furniture only according to the vision of its craftsmen, but there is something else that lends a touch of distinguishing class to its pieces; the fact that there are so many of them, nearly customized to customers tastes.
Even a quick look through a collection of Leathercraft designs will yield up a wealth of opportunities for design. You can capitalize on the raw natural beauty of one of their sofas and build your interior design around it, or you can assimilate one of their chairs into the existing design of a setting.
This becomes easier once you realize how many options are at your disposal, not only in terms of leather color but in finish and metal accent, even in the finish of the exposed wood in their designs. They offer such a depth and breadth of offerings that there seems like an infinity of possibility, all contained within the seemingly limited scope of seating.
Check out our collection of Leathercraft if you’re interested in seeing what kind of class their leather furniture can offer your living room, parlor, family room, or any other room in your home. When you see how much they have to offer, there won’t be any doubt left in your mind about the significant impact their furnishings can have on the spirit of your interior design.
Part of Our Collection
Leathercraft makes up a distinguished portion of our highly esteemed portfolio of furniture in wood, leather, and metal, but it is only a part. There are situations in which their furniture would make the perfect touch for some setting in your home but in order to determine that you need to take a step back and evaluate your vision for design. You also need to become familiar with the other designs that are out there at your disposal to make the vision a reality.
In our catalog, you will find a rich listing of designs by Leathercraft, but you will also find a portfolio of selections representing our rich catalog of other famous names in furniture. In our catalog and in our showroom you will find examples of Copeland Furniture, Charleston Forge and Hubbardton Forge, Berlin Gardens and Luxcraft Furniture, CR Laine, Thayer Coggin, and even Wesley Hall Furniture. Whether you appreciate the classic look of care, beautifully finished hardwood, or the comfort and regal character of bright, burnished leather, you can find a look to satisfy your vision here at Ohio Hardwood Furniture.
Our Own Line
We are also proud to produce our own line of hardwood furniture from sustainably sourced and harvested hardwood stock. Our designs are different from anything else you’ll see; we never cut corners and we place quality on the highest possible pedestal. All of our hardwood furniture is completely benchmade, carefully inspected at each stage of production, and finished by hand as well.
In addition, we give our customers the choice to customize the furniture they order from us in terms of wood, size, and even stain. Customer service takes just as much a priority as the production of our furniture and is the cornerstone of our business.
Care for the Environment
Not only is our furniture produced to a peerless level of quality, but our practices are intended to be sustainable and to benefit the earth as well as they benefit us. As mentioned, all of our hardwood furniture is crafted from sustainably sourced and harvested hardwood stock, from forests that are allowed to mature in long rotations. In some instances, we allow our stock to mature for up to 30 years before harvest.
In addition, we don’t waste any of the by-products of our processes. We use cuttings and ends as fuel for stoves and fireplaces, we save chips to make mulch and we even create bedding from the sawdust we produce. Nothing goes to waste and everything is used; saving us money, and just plain saving the environment.

]]>In the search for furniture that offers you both classic inspiration and modern appeal, you will come across several names time and time again. Among these are Hubbardton Forge, Copeland Furniture, Leathercraft Furniture, and Wesley Hall Furniture, among many others. Driven by the vision of their designers and craftsman, each of them offers the discrete consumer something unique and irreplaceable.
Another one of these - and one of the producers of the most immediately striking designs out there - is Charleston Forge. Timeless, elegant, and refined and uncut all at once, Charleston Forge furniture has a loyal and growing following among designers. If you’re looking for Charleston Forge in Cleveland, our showroom is just a bit down the road in Peninsula, Ohio. Of course, you should just shop through our online store and find what you’re looking for here at Ohio Hardwood Furniture. Here’s what you can come to expect from Charleston Forge Furniture.
Unsurpassable Quality
While you may have been familiar with the shockingly inspiring designs that come from Charleston Forge’s factory, made of steel, wood, and often glass, what you may not have known is that every single piece of furniture they produce is entirely crafted by hand.
Not only are all of their finished pieces constructed entirely by hand, but just as importantly, every single design they produce is drafted in house. All of their products are the result of unique inspiration that is then carefully crafted to bring you the final products that you can see here in our store. Since everything is made entirely by hand, they are able to apply a fine level of scrutiny to their quality control. That is to say; what they do by hand approaches a level of quality that can never be approached by automation.
Sustainable Process
Not only are all of Charleston Forge’s finished pieces completely made by hand, but they are committed to pursuing sustainable practices, just like we are here at Ohio Hardwood. Charleston Forge actually follows a number of practices that are intended to minimize their impact on their environment and to upcycle and recycle as much as possible. For example, they use recycled steel in the production of their furniture where possible and source all of their hardwood stock from Appalachia - where nearly 3 trees are produced for every one harvested. In addition, they use environmentally friendly paints and finishes in much of their line.
Made in the United States
As mentioned above, every single piece of furniture that comes from Charleston Forge is made by hand and designed internally. In addition, all of their pieces are made right here in America, in the Blue Ridge Mountains of beautiful North Carolina. For nearly thirty years their craftsmen have been forging, carving, planing, and finishing some of the most individualistic pieces of furniture that our country has seen, and their domestic operations enable them to directly oversee everything that goes on behind the scenes.
A Variety of Appeal
As nearly all examples of Charleston Forge Furniture are made to order, the customer can exhibit great control over the visual appeal of the finished product. For example, Charleston Forge offers a number of finishes on their exposed maple and oak woodwork, at the same time giving customers the option to order their wood finished with a distressed look. Their craftsmen also offer a number of finishes on the exposed metal of their pieces. Accounting for the number of finishes in wood, metal, and even leather that you can find in Charleston Forge Furniture, there’s a solution to match any setting.
Harmony between Iron and Wood
If you happen to be looking for designs by Charleston Forge in Cleveland, our online store is always open. You can check out some of the designs that you will find in our collection of Charleston Forge via the link above and you will see just what kind of elegance is typical of their simplicity.
They appear to be almost intentionally simplified, but their designs are unforgettable. The lack of ornamentation draws attention to the natural character of the wood as framed by steel. In fact, the steel itself possesses a certain undeniable quality of native beauty that cannot be overlooked. Few pieces of modern furniture command such poise with such little adornment as do the articles from Charleston Forge.
Investigate our collection of Charleston Forge Furniture via the link above. We might not be the ideal solution for Charleston Forge in Cleveland, but we are the ideal supplier of Charleston Forge. While you’re here you can also investigate our own collection of furniture that, like Charleston Forge furniture, is made entirely by hand, here in America, pursuant to environmentally sustainable practices. Take a look through our online offerings and if you want to set up a time to come see our actual showroom, give us a call at 330-657-2095.
]]>We do this partially by creating some of the finest, benchmade, hardwood furniture in the country. We also do this by offering an exquisite line of furniture from carefully selected partners. We also do this by providing valuable information to our customers.
In that respect, we offer our insight into design and how our furniture, and the furniture of some of our partners, can be used to compliment your home. The architecture and the design concept of a home will influence the spirit of the location. So will the prevailing color scheme and any predominant themes to which you stick in terms of interior decor.
It’s no secret that the furniture that you include in your home will have as big of an influence, if not bigger, on the way the home presents itself to visitors. Your furniture can accent or clash with your design aesthetic, and it is a very important element of your home. It’s also fairly permanent, and a well-chosen decision will stick with you for the rest of your life. Therefore you should take the time you need in order to make the right selection in the first place.
Because furniture will make such a pronounced influence on the spirit of a setting, we offer plenty of different styles in our collection. Although we are critical and sparing with the furniture we choose to offer in terms of make, the styles are diverse enough to lend a little bit of a unique touch to any school of interior design.
Among the many names that we offer in our online store as well as in our showroom is Wesley Hall. Wesley Hall furniture is some of the finest in the world, remarkable for its quality and comfort as much as for their company vision. It is one of the few names that we have selected to offer as a part of our inventory, and for a number of good reasons.
These reasons will become apparent throughout the course of this article, but the key here is that you can cultivate harmony with Wesley Hall furniture while you add an unmistakable touch of distinction to your home.
Wesley Hall Quality
First, we would like to vindicate our choice in Wesley Hall, as we are proud of the fact that we are so exclusive with the names in furniture that we allow into our collection. For example, you will find highly regarded examples of furniture from makers such as Copeland, Leathercraft, and Luxcraft Outdoor Furniture in our collection alongside Wesley Hall.
Wesley Hall, like Ohio Hardwood, puts people at the center of its operations; they put stock in their workers and believe in the value of human equity. By treating their workers properly, they ensure that the people who work for them put their hearts into the operation, dedicating themselves to the quality of the furniture that they produce. For example, they pay their employees an hourly wage, rather than paying them by the piece they produce. This helps to ensure that there is no incentive to compromise quality.
Also relevant to their staunch dedication to quality is the fact that Wesley Hall Furniture is entirely benchmade in the United States; it is produced in North Carolina as it has been for many years. Every piece is made entirely by hand using only the best materials that can be sourced and proven techniques, including handmade and hand-joined hardwood frames, hand-tied spring systems, and high-quality, ultra-premium cushioning.
The Wesley Hall Sit
There’s something else about Wesley Hall that distinguishes their name beyond the salient points that we have so far addressed. It would be quite enough if Wesley Hall produced furniture of such high-quality and aesthetic class, but there is something more about their furniture that gives it such objective intrinsic value.
Specifically, this regards the importance of seating in your home. There is an argument that all furniture is functional, to a degree. A table is used as a temporary, level storage place for homemade objects, where they are plates or the mail. A hutch contains sundry personal accessories, and a cupboard stores the dishes and the cups. There is a measure of functional utility that comes along with any piece of furniture, but there is no escaping the utility of a Wesley Hall sofa or seat.
There is an industry phrase that you might recognize, and that is the “Wesley Hall sit” which eponymously describes the quality of seating arrangements with respect to their comfort. The phrase says it all; there is no comfort like a Wesley Hall seating arrangement, and the furniture industry has been permanently colored by its influence.
Match the Color Scheme
Beyond the incomparable value and quality of Wesley Hall, one of the greatest attributes comes in the form of the customizability that they offer for their customers, that we are also able to provide.
Wesley Hall offers an amazing number of premium luxury textiles as well as leather upholstery to grace their furniture. The collection is so vast it’s pointless to enumerate the number of finishes, colors, patterns, and other features that you can customize in their furniture.
If your home is arrayed with a regal golden and burgundy color pattern, you can find a finish in Wesley Hall that will perfectly complement the setting. If your living room would be made all the more welcoming and demure with the addition of a black leather couch, then you can find that in Wesley Hall just the same. In their catalog of diverse colors, leathers, finishes, patterns, and much more, there truly is something for every setting.
Customize the Wood and Hardware
It would be quite enough of a bonus if Wesley Hall’s commitment to customization and the ideal customer service ended with the innumerable array of patterns, fabrics, textiles, and leather they offer in their upholstery. Yet it doesn’t end there. When you shop through a collection of Wesley Hall designs like those that you will find in our online store, you can customize the finish of the wood and even of the hardware before you settle on a design.
That means if you see a sofa or a chair in our collection that you love but wish it offered you something different in the style or color of the upholstery, you can switch it up easily as we have already explained. At the same time, if you really needed brass hardware or a dark wood stain on the exposed wood, you can customize it with their designs.
Go Grandiose
Something else amazing about Wesley Hall Furniture is how it provides you with so many avenues to decorate. Some of our other designers, such as Copeland, excel at simplified, minimal aesthetics that have been described as minimalistic. That is ideal for some settings, but not for all.
If the design of your home calls for a more refined and dignified, even grandiose aesthetic, you can complement that with some of the positively regal designs that you will find in our Wesley Hall collection. Sometimes simple is the way to go and sometimes overstated is nothing of the sort, but necessary for the harmony of a design.
Go Simple
As mentioned above, sometimes you need a vibrantly overstated design to set off the tones that you have created for your interior spaces, but that is not always the case. As we mentioned earlier, there is sometimes a need for a simplified, understated, humble appeal that you need.
In settings like those, you can capitalize on some of the more toned down offerings that you can find in Wesley Hall. If you make the mistake of setting together elements of design that do not integrate well with the furniture you choose, it can have a somewhat negative effect on the spirit of your home. Luckily Wesley Hall makes a great name for itself by offering you plenty of different designs, and any of these can be relatively easily altered with the vast customizability you can have in Wesley Hall.
Great Versatility
With the amount of versatility that their designs offer you, it should come as no surprise that one of the greatest benefits of decorating with Wesley Hall designs is that it offers you so much versatility in how you finish your interior decor.
Wesley Hall seating can lend your home an air of sophistication that you almost would not be able to pull off with any other designs, but it can also be nearly self-effacing in its humility. Between these two extremes, there is a positive infinity of possibilities, that can match to almost any setting. As it turns out, you can have it all with Wesley Hall - you can have unmatched comfort, excellent quality, and a diversity of design aesthetics that will never disappoint you.

Whatever vision you wish to create for your home, you can probably pull it off with the designs that we offer here from Wesley Hall. As you shop through our collection of Wesley Hall Furniture, remember that you can easily make an accessory of so many of our other designers' pieces, including Thayer Coggin, Leathercraft Furniture, Charleston Forge, Hallagan, and many others.
Whether you’re going for a Midcentury Modern look, a minimalist look, a classic design, or something rustic and bucolic, it’s never been easier than it can be with the help of Ohio Hardwood Furniture. Not only is our collection comprehensive, but we offer our own line of unique, original furniture, exemplary for design and construction.
Our Own Line
Our own line of furniture that we create here at Ohio Hardwood Furniture is made only from select native hardwood stock such as White Oak, Red Oak, Cherry, and Maple. We give you the option of wood and of finish when we create furniture for you, but we take it a step further than that.
All of our unique hardwood furniture is created in house by skilled craftsmen and is entirely benchmade. We use only tried and true methods for construction, such as mortise and tenon joints that are designed to add strength and last a lifetime. We place quality on a pedestal and let it guide all of our processes.
Responsibility
On the note of quality, we don’t just create pieces of furniture that are remarkable for their durability and quality. We make it a point to promote sustainable practices and minimize our impact on the environment.
To ensure the health of our hardwood stock, we harvest wood in particularly long cycles, sometimes as long as 30 years. That gives wooded land time to mature and develop; other loggers harvest in much shorter cycles, and that is stressful on the ecology of the system that it impacts.
In addition, we minimize waste. Spare odds and ends of lumber get used as fuel to heat our shops and homes, and even small bits and pieces and shavings get repurposed as mulch. We don’t even waste sawdust - we repurpose it for use as bedding for livestock.
Visit Us
Our online collection might be impressively dazzling, but there’s no replacement for a visit to our showroom. We’re a bit out of the way, located in Peninsula, Ohio, but the trip is worth it. You’ll get to interact with some of our own furniture and some of our floor displays firsthand, which is the only way to really get a feeling for the type of quality and spirit it will lend to a setting.
Check out our online collection, and if you can make time to come see us and learn more about processes, we’d love to see you. You can always reach out to us at 330-657-2095 anytime you want to plan a visit.
]]>Many of our pieces are designed for the interior of homes, but many of our clients maintain outdoor spaces for recreation and entertainment, and that is a good thing in its own right. Entertaining in the outdoors, and just spending time outside, in general, is good for the body and the mind and is tied to a suite of health benefits as well.
However, some materials are better suited to outdoor living like others, and for that reason, you will find some pieces of furniture in our collection from select suppliers. Just as we are discrete in the production of our own furniture, the rest of our collection consists of additions from partners who are as serious about quality and customer service as we are. One of these partners that specialized in the production of pieces for outdoor living is Luxcraft, and as it turns out, there’s no shortage of reasons to love Luxcraft outdoor furniture. With no further ado, check out these reasons to add truly distinct designs by Luxcraft to your outdoor space.
There is more than one way to gauge environmentally sound and sustainable practices. For example, here at Ohio Hardwood, we are judicious about the hardwood stock we harvest. Whereas it is customary for other loggers to harvest hardwoods within rotations of fewer than ten years, we make it a habit and a point to allow forests to regenerate and mature before we harvest, sometimes waiting as long as 30 years. In addition, we make use of all of the scraps of wood that we produce during the construction of our pieces of furniture.
We burn the odds and ends and use the wood as a heating fuel source. We make animal bedding from the chips and sawdust, and so on and so forth. The point is to eliminate waste wherever possible, and we make it a point to do so.
Luxcraft outdoor furniture is also noteworthy for its environmentally friendly and sustainable practices. Their outdoor furniture is made of poly lumber, which, by its very nature is a boon for the environment. To put it very plainly, the earth is flooded with tons and tons of plastic waste every year. The estimates vary but the consensus is plain that the earth is gradually being overloaded by plastics that take forever to decompose or never do.
The poly lumber which constitutes is made of a recycled plastic polymer known as high-density polyethylene (HDPE). High-density polyethylene has many uses, but in this case, it’s purpose is to create tough, dependable outdoor furniture - but more on that in a moment.
Luxcraft’s process converts old milk bottles and detergent bottles, among other recyclable materials, into HDPE boards from which they create their furniture. The end results are pieces that are over 90% recycled material by weight, which means that each piece of furniture a whole lot of plastic which will subsequently not end up in the oceans or in landfills as waste.
Therefore Luxcraft does its part to help minimize the impact of consumer plastic production on the health of the earth and creates a beautifully aesthetic class of products in the process. Environmental friendliness, however, is only the beginning when it comes to the value of Luxcraft furniture.
It would be quite enough for a producer to create designs in furniture that helped to minimize our impact on the environment. Luxcraft, however, has also created a portfolio of products that are unbelievably resilient and essentially maintenance-free.
The high-density polyethylene from which their furniture is made has a number of different uses in addition to creating the containers that constitute the recycled furniture. It is also known for being used to create pipes and chemical containers, among other uses. It is a high-quality thermoplastic that is flexible but very strong and extremely durable, and it is also UV resistant, non-leaching and surprisingly tolerant of extreme temperatures. It’s no wonder that it is so heavily used in so many different industries. Interestingly enough, that makes it perfectly suitable as a material for outdoor furniture. Not only is it valuable in its own right to remove it from the cycle of pollution, but it creates a surprisingly fitting material for the construction of outdoor furniture. Because of these traits, it is effectively maintenance-free.
Because of several of the traits aforementioned, Luxcraft outdoor furniture is perfectly suited to the outdoors and requires almost no maintenance. The material will not deteriorate over time and is resistant to UV radiation. In fact, Luxcraft furniture is available in a number of colors in accordance with the differing needs of customers and even the colors themselves are UV stable. Therefore, their furniture will not fade, flake, crack, warp or splinter or otherwise degrade in response to the elements.
It is not only UV resistant but temperature resistant as well, in addition to being naturally waterproof. Therefore, it will not swell or change with changing conditions. As it is not a natural material, it will neither rot nor attract insects. Because it is resistant to these factors it does not require waterproofing, sealing, staining, painting, or any other counteractive measures or treatments. We called it low maintenance and that’s what it is. In fact, it wouldn’t really be unfair to call it maintenance free. Luxcraft furniture will be as sturdy, and as bright, in ten years as it is today. Set your backyard up with some of their outdoor designs and you’ll be putting a lot of time back in your hands.
There’s enough to love about the fact that Luxcraft furniture is good for the environment and that it is also basically maintenance-free. However, while Luxcraft is noteworthy for having a positive effect on the earth and being easy to take care of, you can trust that their furniture is made to an uncommon standard of quality, to begin with.
As they say themselves, they build their products and put a specific and pronounced emphasis on durability and longevity, which are two key things to look for in outdoor furniture, although it could be said that you should look for those qualities in any furniture.
Any given unit of Luxcraft furniture is a testament to quality in furniture production. They are stable, balanced, and well crafted. Their joints are strong and secure and the hardware used in their construction gives them a rock-solid feel.
It would be one thing if the material alone engendered such quality in their products, and it does. The HDPE from which their furniture is crafted is naturally resilient to the elements. They go a step further, however, to ensure the quality, durability, and comfort of their finished products, and it shows. Rest assured that their furniture isn’t just resistant to insects and the sun’s rays, but that it will be comfortable and durable for many years to come.
There’s an old saying that you’re in for a dollar if you’re in for a dime. It goes something like that, and the point is that if you cut corners in the short run you’ll be paying for it in time (or money) in the long run. All of Luxcraft’s furniture is made right here in America and that gives them a direct hand in quality control.
That's critical to quality, since, as we mentioned in the section above, quality is central to Luxcraft furniture. Many companies make bold claims about quality standards but are so drawn out over their supply chains that they are difficult to maintain and ensure. As stated, all Luxcraft furniture is made right here in the United States of America which allows them to oversee production from start to finish. It also allows for an uncommon and uncompromising degree of quality as explained in the immediately preceding section.
In addition, Luxcraft outdoor furniture is made in a dizzying number of colors - 32 colors, to be exact. These colors range from bright reds and blues to natural finishes that mimic the color of exotic and domestic hardwoods. They don’t just give you a few color choices and then set you adrift. Part of their commitment to customer service and satisfaction is the fact that they make it possible for you to color coordinate any outdoor living space with the greatest of ease.
With Luxcraft, it doesn’t matter if your outdoor living area is under a red gazebo or features a red brick fire pit or chimenea. You can easily match the colors of the other fixtures of your living area with examples of Luxcraft furniture to complete the scene with no questions asked. Of course, that’s only one example. If the colors of natural woods appeal to you, go with them. Or you could go with blue or lime green or tangerine - the choice is yours. You can have your cake and eat it too, as some might say.
On top of this already commendable portfolio of claims, there is the fact that Luxcraft poly furniture is covered by an impressive warranty. Not only is their furniture made to compliment any situation and built to last for many years, but they extend a guarantee with the purchase. Take a seat somewhere before reading this, because it’s going to leave an impression.
Luxcraft furniture isn’t just durable and built for the long haul. It is guaranteed to do so. All Luxcraft furniture that is bought and destined for residential settings come with a lifetime guarantee. That means that if you buy a Luxcraft piece or set today, it may very well be the last set you ever need to buy in your lifetime. Take your time shopping and spare no expense, because when you purchase with confidence from a collection of Luxcraft furniture, you will be getting a product that will last.
This is generous enough, but they even cover their furniture for commercial uses and settings by a five-year warranty. If there’s something that takes a beating it’s commercial outdoor furniture, but Luxcraft still stands by their products with a five-year warranty.
When it comes to customer service, it’s hard to beat Luxcraft. A big part of their commitment to customer service comes in the form of the wide range of options they offer, their warranty and their commitment to quality, but it goes much further. It was by no accident that Luxcraft grew from a two-person operation to a full-fledged company deserving of such repute.
Work with Luxcraft and you will be treated like a member of the team as though you are a personal friend or family member. They conduct every practice and each transaction with the highest measure of respect and integrity in order to ensure honesty and to cultivate trust with their customers. They have that much in common with Ohio Hardwood Furniture, which is a big part of the reason that we feature them among our catalog of the highest quality furnishings for your home.
There are several of the best reasons to love Luxcraft products. Whether it’s for the number of options of colors that they offer or for the fact that they are doing the good work when it comes to combating pollution, Luxcraft furniture is a great investment for your home.
You can find a collection of pieces representing Luxcraft’s portfolio here on our website, but we would love for you to come pay us a visit in our store as well. We’re situated in Peninsula, Ohio, which, though a little off the path, is well worth the find. Give us a call at 330-657-2095 to set up a time to visit. Till then, take some time to get familiar with our online catalog.
